Out of concern for the student, the instructor immediately called Mr. Tim, Dean of Special Programs. She informed the Dean of Special Programs of her concerns regarding the student’s mental state, and that the student has been very confrontational about getting a passing grade. The dean instructed her that she needed additional training in dealing with students with disabilities, because there will be many other students like Richard enrolled in her classes in the future. The instructor was very disappointed in the response of the dean, and felt as though he insinuated she lacked in her ability to effectively work with disabled students. Afterwards, the dean went to the cafeteria looking for Richard so that he could meet with him regarding the problem reported by the instructor. After locating the student, they went to his office to discuss the problem. The dean remembered that another instructor had the same issue with the same student last semester, because he was not taking his medication properly. In addition, the dean found out that the student was on probation for his conduct and that he was supposed to be meeting with the mental health counselor monthly. The student had failed to do both.
