Case Study: Determination Of The Density Of A Penny
Part A - Determination of the Density of a Penny.
Determine what kind of pennies that will be used, in this case 1983 post pennies were used. After determination of what pennies will be used, 24 pennies were gathered from 1983 and post 1983.
Put 30 mL of water into a graduated cylinder and weighed it, and also had to determine the volume of water in the graduated cylinder.
Weighed the mass of the graduated cylinder, water, and six coins, determined the total volume of water and the six coins in the graduated cylinder. This process was repeated by adding 6 more pennies to the graduated cylinder till all 24 pennies were in the graduated cylinder. Example: ( +6 pennies, weigh, total volume ).

The mass of ten pennies minted before 1982 was calculated five times using the scale and then averaged. These steps were repeated with the pennies minted after 1982. 30 milliliters of water was placed into the graduated cylinder. The pennies minted before 1982 were placed in the water and the new volume was recorded and used to calculate the volume of the pennies. The five calculations were averaged. These steps were then repeated with the pennies minted after 1982. The precision of the mass and volume data was calculated. The mass calculations were divided by the volume calculations to find the densities for both sets of pennies.…
