North of the intersection, Brimley and McNicoll, resides a school called Agnes Macphail Public School. The school is named after Agnes Campbell Macphail, a Canadian politician who served as the first female Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons. The school, founded in 1981, stood for many of the same things that Macphail did, including her commitment to greatness. Macphail, the MP, made ripples in equality and Canadian politics with her penal reforms , while Macphail the PS is one of several Toronto Gold Eco Schools and strives to give students access to educational technology and a plethora of extracurricular activities. I’ve been told that the school has an extensive amount of clubs for a school its size which yield back to…

On March 7th, 1980, two high school freshman were found smoking in the bathroom at Piscataway High School in Middlesex County, NJ. The students were escorted to the vice principal Mr. Choplick’s office. The defendant, TLO, who was one of the students that were caught smoking denied the accusation. Mr. Choplick inspected TLO’s purse and found a box of cigarettes. Afterward removing the box of cigarettes, he saw a pack of rolling papers. Mr. Choplick suspected that a closer examination of the purse may yield evidence of drug use and that a thorough inspection would be needed. After a thorough search, he found a small amount of marijuana, a pipe, a number of empty plastic bags, a large amount one dollar bills, an index card with a list of who…

Chardonnay stated that her grades were good, but in one of her classes, she was failing until she turned in a missing assignment. I asked Chardonnay if she had gotten any trouble lately. Chardonnay stated she couldn’t remember when she got in trouble, but she did remember that she was upset about something. Chardonnay…
Towson University was once known as the Maryland State Normal School for the instruction of teachers in 1864. Two years after being created in 1864 the school opened its doors with McFadden Alexander Newell being its president. Newell had goals to establish model schools for teachers to practice their skills and see first-hand how what they have learned worked on elementary students. Unfortunately, these practice schools were often across town because of space limitations.…
In 1949 a law was made in Pennsylvania that public schools must start each school day with ten bible verses being read, however, there could be no comment on the verses that were read. Students would stand and say the verses along with the teachers. They would then have the students recite the Lord's Prayer. If the teachers refused to read the verses every morning they could be fired. This law angered some people because they believed it was a violation of the First Amendment and so two families sued.…

The Roth and Sindermann cases are the legal precedents for assessing the procedural rights of nontenured teachers (See Figure 12.1). Because the Supreme Court has held that impairment of an employee’s property or liberty interests triggers procedural protections, the question arises as to what constitutes a violation of these interests. Courts have purposely avoided precisely defining the concepts of liberty and property, preferring to allow experience and time to shape their meanings. Since 1972, the Supreme Court and federal appellate courts have rendered many decisions that provide guidance in understanding these concepts.…
