late. In order to aid nursing home residents in an effective manner, one must not only integrate preferences and options, but also refine nursing home environments (Choi et al., 2008, p. 545). The changes in the nursing home facilities may range from no longer including structured activities to making residents feel at home. In addition, adding complex tasks to residents daily life may help with feelings of unworthiness. Restoring problem solving in residents may be a key to preventing suicide. However, further research is necessary to effectively aid nursing home residents. Further…

Nursing homes, however, are designed for persons in need of 24-hour nursing care (Allen, 2011) Even though they provide almost the same residential components of other long-term care options, which includes housing, personal care, protection, supervision, and sometimes therapy, the availability of on-site medical staff is the edge they have over the others. Nursing homes have custodial care, which a person with Alzheimer’s disease will need. The custodial care which includes assistance with all of the activities of daily living like eating, dressing, bathing, walking and medication management. With the above explanation, Don will likely choose a nursing home for the care of his wife, Mary.…

At the end of my clinicals, there was a meeting about not over recommending a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for people who do not truly need a SNF according to the hospital. One of the criteria for not needing a SNF was if the person was functioning at the same baseline they were functioning at before surgery. This became a dilemma for one patient who had a total knee replacement because the patient could barely stand upright and walked with a severe genu valgum. According to the patient, she was not very mobile before surgery and her husband helped take care of her. However, the patient seemed motivated to improve her functional status and wanted to be able to walk normally again.…

Colonial Care Center is a local Long beach Nursing Home Located on the corner of Cherry and 5th street. This facility is around the corner from my house, so I was able to visit the home multiple times to get a better understanding of how the residents are living. If I had to rate the residents daily life from my three visits, I would give this home a 6 out of 10. Some of the residents seem to enjoy their interactions with the staff, while others looked miserable. The attire of the patients was all over the board. Some were dressed in pajamas and others were dressed in pants and shorts as if they were ready to go on a nice walk. The staff appeared to have a good relationship with the residents that were willing to interact with them. They knew…

Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) is one of the fastest-growing residential settings for older adults in the US. They provide diverse settings and care alternatives to adults. The general population prefers to receive care in an assisted living facility rather than a nursing home by a six to one margin. The increasing preference for assisted living facilities is caused by the different social stigma it has compared to other long-term care facilities (Bowblis, 2012, p. 238). Assisted living residents have a lower level of need and are regulated at the state level, making them more unique across the nation, however that can lead to inconsistent, inferiority care.…
