In the Matter of Annette B., the father made periodic and insignificant efforts to find his child once his confinement was over with. There was inadequate evidence to disprove a conclusion of abandonment. There was very little the dad could do while incarcerated. The grandmother of the child either could not or would not help locate the mother, and the Department of Social Services in New York wouldn’t help the grandmother. Not one thing in records the records recommends that the father had been notified of the facts that the mother had moved to Orange County, New York, or that his daughter was in the custody of the State. However, it still should have encouraged the father to one way or another try to track down his daughter to keep contact with her.…

Mary Barnett, the mother of a six month old daughter, left for San Francisco to see her fiancé. Leaving her daughter behind, she returned seven days later to find her child dead. A trial was then conducted to determine if she would be convicted of second degree murder and be sentenced to 18 years. The witnesses and information they provided was laid before me and I am to determine with the evidence presented whether Mary Barnett is rightfully guilty or not guilty.…
Substances, such as alcohol, are used for a variety of different reasons. Alcohol is often used as a way to celebrate a special occasion. It can also be used to help an individual “take the edge off” when he or she is feeling overwhelmed. Many individuals use alcohol when gathered with others in a social setting, while others may drink alcohol when spending time alone. The use of alcohol can become a problem when the individual begins to face challenges in his or her daily life. Some of these challenges can include increasing problems with emotional or physical health, the ability to maintain a steady job, and a steady withdrawal from family and friends. Sometimes, an individual may become completely dependent on alcohol in order to feel as if he or she is functioning properly. An individual who has built up a tolerance to alcohol will need to not only drink every day, but will also need to drink in increasingly larger amounts in order to feel good. One of the most notable and famous cases of substance abuse and alcoholism is that of Betty Ford. Betty Ford was the wife of President Gerald R. Ford and was considered as one of the most influential First Ladies in American History. Some of Betty Ford’s greatest accomplishments included her advocacies in breast cancer awareness as well as women’s rights (Meyer, Chapman, & Weaver, 2009). Although Betty Ford was well known and admired for these accomplishments, she became an even greater influence in our modern history when she was able to admit to and overcome her lifelong struggles with alcohol and prescription medications.…

Messy child custody cases are seen all to often. Child custody cases can never be clean and pretty but the losing parent should not be able to justify rude comments, violent outbursts, attempted lawsuits, or lies by saying they were only trying to get what is best for their child. Parents only think selfishly when they try to get custody and will do whatever it takes to win custody battles. Many times it’s not the parents decision to make and the way kids are treated by the losing parent in a child custody case is unjustifiable.…
