Sue believes continuing her education and pursuing a bachelors degree in nursing will not contribute to her becoming a better nurse. Sue believes her clinical experience has more of an effect on her nursing skills and patient care than her classroom education. However, Sue recognizes there is a higher demand for nurses with a BSN. Sue is feeling insecure because she feels she could lose her position as a charge nurse to a nurse who has attained their BSN. Sue believes attaining her BSN will not make her anymore of a professional nurse but will help her secure her position.
2. How would you respond to her?
I would tell Sue that I think it’s a great idea that she goes back to school. I agree with her that it would help to secure her job, as many facilities are now requiring a BSN or higher. I would also explain to her that by continuing education she will be educated on she will refine previously learned skills as well as learn new evidenced based practice that will enhance her skills as a nurse.

It requires students to make lifestyle changes. I believe in order to successfully go through nursing school one must dedicate themselves. I believe it will be challenging going back to school for my BSN and Masters. I will have to juggle being a mother, wife, friend, RN and student. I believe the biggest challenge for me with continuing education is the time spent away from my family. Even though I feel bad that I cannot give my family as much attention as I would like to, I know in the long run it will be worth it.
