Case Study Of Bill Brown's Work
The following paragraphs will answer the question of what Manuel’s problem appears to be. It will also discuss if Bill Brown’s work place being substance-free would be appropriate and if so the steps it would take to implement. Lastly, it will discuss how an employee assistance program may help with the situation.
It appears Manuel is suffering from stress and burnout. Burnout is the “incapacitating condition in which individuals lose a sense of the basic purpose and fulfillment of their work” (Mondy, 2016, p. 354). Burnout can cause emotional exhaustion. He probably kept moving forward through life, not admitting anything was wrong, only making things worse for himself. When Bill Brown told him, he had to work more, that added to his stress as well. As he was a productive worker and contentious about his work, as his work declined that probably stressed him out as well, realizing he was letting himself down, but not having the tools to help himself.
A substance free workplace would be a great program for Bill Brown’s company. A substance-free workplace makes management pay attention to when there are problems going on. It also makes it so that if an employee is dealing with an issue it gives employees and companies the proper tools to know how to deal with these issues. It starts the critical conversations that people need to have when facing issues in their lives.     In the short story “Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket” the main character (Tom) gets obsessed with work that he misses out on time with his wife. Even Tom’s wife tries to convince him that he is obsessing over work, “You work too much though, Tom- and too hard” (Finney 6).
