CASE STUDY: FACEBOOK
Facebook: Offensive Content Versus Free Speech
The social networking site Facebook has over 200 million active members and is available in 40 languages. Seventy percent of Facebook users live outside the United States, less than a third are

college students, and the fastest growing demographic is individuals thirty-five years and older.
With this kind of diversity in membership, there are often opposing viewpoints regarding acceptable content. Facebook has rules prohibiting hateful, threatening, or pornographic content

or content that contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence. Some content, however, resides in the gray area between natural and obscene, between inflammatory and hateful. When an issue does reside in this gray area, Facebook has to make a judgment call based on its ethics and value system, which may be at odds with its users’ values.
In January 2009, Facebook removed pictures of nursing women from personal pages, citing

that these pictures violated the policy against nudity. In 2008, Facebook received criticism for not removing content, specifically, the pages of anti-gypsy groups. Members of the UK parliament

condemned Facebook for hosting pages that include images of the Ku Klux Klan. And in 2009,

Facebook was pressured to remove groups that denied the Holocaust.
No doubt Facebook is in a tough position. They would like to maintain freedom of speech on the Web, but critics argue that Facebook has the responsibility to decide what is appropriate for

users within its terms of service and that hate groups should not be tolerated. Issues like these are likely to continue as Facebook adds users with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. What steps has Facebook taken to deal with these ethical dilemmas?
Currently, Facebook does not actively search for content that doesn’t adhere to their policies. Instead, they rely on users to flag this content. Questionable items go before a team that

    I image in every high school journalism class when an article is declined access into the school newspaper because it may be pushing the envelope most students will cry “freedom of speech.” I wonder how many of the school newspaper editors and/or principals are aware of this case and use it as a reference when talking to their students on why the article is being withheld. People still battle this issue every day. Yes we do have freedom of speech, but people need to be smart in how they use it. Teachers, principals, and many other professionals have lost their job over Facebook statues or a tweet. Recently, federal law just announced that you cannot lose your job over a Facebook post. The law just said that Facebook posts are protected under free speech. I wonder how that has effected the people that have already lost their jobs due to that issue. Are they able to get their old jobs back? The argument over free speech on Facebook posts has employers saying that it may affect their business or it makes the school look bad.     Hodgkinson maintains a critical, authoritative, and somewhat pessimistic tone throughout the article. The author critical tone is displayed in his thorough evaluation of every aspect of Facebook ranging from the disconnection and competition created amongst the users (326) and the purely capitalistic motivation of Peter Thiel, one of the men behind the site (328-334).His examination of these two subject is truthful, but pessimistic and biased because the author does not acknowledge any of the benefits of social networking. The writer’s authority is displayed in the structure of this article. He begins the article with a statement that immediately communicates to the reader what his stance is (326).     In February of 2011, Facebook announced a new controversial program that would give third party developers and websites user’s personal information that ranged from phone numbers to home addresses. Consequently, our personal data was being exported to third party sites, which then used Facebook to advertise back to us in the hope of potential profits. Ultimately, this program was solely cultivated for economic gains on part of Facebook; however, it had to be withdrawn within a few days after the company was harshly reprimanded for surrendering users personal information for profitable revenue. The high volume of criticism was the reason why Zuckerberg came out and downplayed the privacy loss associated with this program and calling it the new “social norm.” Although a quote like this may seem very bold as it only justifies the wrong doing of Facebook, privacy loss should now be more accepted due to the new mediums Facebook allows the online community to achieve.
