1.1 INTRODUCTION
Furnmart Limited was established in 1976, trading in furniture and electrical appliance through a network of stores. Furnmart is a multi-national corporation operating in the retail industry, specializing in furniture and electronic appliances retail. The company was listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange (“BSE”) in 1998 and its headquarters is in Gaborone, Botswana. The company operates 49 stores inclusive of 1 Home Corp store, which is a division of Furnmart in Botswana, and regionally 34 in Namibia, 35 in South Africa and 5 in Zambia.

The main problem, which the company faced, was relative to reduced market share and profits due to low-quality management and economic meltdown. Thus, research will assess the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) in Botswana retail operations, to propose philosophies of regaining the lost competitive edge in the Botswana market.
1.4 PRELIMINARY LITERATURE REVIEW
Quality is a result of expectation produced to meet or satisfy requirement or demand (Project Management Insitute, 2013). It is worth to look at the role of Quality in a business environment, as quality is fitness for purpose and safe for use. Quality management is used to coordinate activities by directing and controlling quality in an organization (Serghi et al., 2014).Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management approach to the total improvement of goods, services, processes and culture at a workplace in order to attain customer satisfaction. (Juran & Godfrey, 1998).The TQM characteristic are, a) focused on the customer satisfaction and provision for Zero Defects. It uses both the positivism and interpretivism.
4.6 APPROACHES
This research will make use of the Deductive approach, by making inferences from a general viewpoint of TQM practices at Furnmart to the specific issues that need attention.
4.7 STRATEGIES
This research will make use of the Survey strategy, as the most effective strategy for collecting data from a large-scale population of potential research participants.
4.8 CHOICES
This research will make use of a mixed method choice, which includes qualitative and quantitative studies
4.9 TIME ZONE
Cross-sectional –refers to the current study period.
DATA COLLECTION TOOLS
The research will make use of the self-administered questionnaires and interview schedules as data collection instruments for primary research. As for secondary research, company internal policies and journal articles in TQM practices will be reviewed.
