THROUGH PROMOTING OMAHA AS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE PROBLEM
Attracting talented individuals to UNMC includes promoting Omaha as a great place to live. UNMC has no problem recruiting talent; however, living in a small city like Omaha seemingly does not have the same appeal as some larger cities.
BACKGROUND
Individuals who decline employment offers from UNMC primarily cite low salary as a deciding factor. Similarly, negative views of environmental features create doubt about the viability of calling Omaha home.
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
The following tables compare these factors in Omaha, Nebraska; Chicago, Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, California; and Los Angeles, California. An additional table compares round trip commute times.
• Table 1 displays the salary equivalent to $100,000 for each of the six cities.
• Table 2 presents the difference in living expenses compared to Omaha.
• Table 3 compares climate and precipitation for each city.
• Table 4 compares commute times in each city. …show more content…
Omaha does not have the lowest cost of living of any city in the United States; however, it is relatively one of the lowest.
Compared to Omaha, housing expense is significantly higher in all of the selected cities. A $250,000 home in Omaha would cost $412,500 in Chicago, $575,000 in Boston, $637,500 in Los Angeles, $750,000 in Washington, DC, and nearly a million dollars in San Francisco at $962,500. It’s easy to see why salaries are higher in these areas. According to Team Tony on Tony Robbins Blog, moving to a more affordable city can put a person on the fast track to financial freedom. Team Tony also contends that you don’t need to sacrifice your quality of life to do
so.
Smaller cities like Omaha offer a lower cost of living while maintaining features of larger cities. Entertainment is plentiful in Omaha, including museums, arts, nightlife, golf, shopping and more. The riverfront and Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge are especially notable, as is the Henry Doorly Zoo. The online Omaha visitor guide is an excellent source for details of fun and exciting things to do and places to go.
Practically perfect weather and nearby beaches makes Los Angeles appear to be the ideal place to live. However, in addition to the higher cost of living, negative factors such as excessive traffic, smog and crowded neighborhoods should be considered. Research has shown how stress can have detrimental effects on your health. People with commutes greater than 10 miles one way are at risk for higher stress levels. Table 4 presents average commute times in the compared cities. A separate article in Time Magazine online reports increased anxiety, high cholesterol, increased blood sugar levels, and high blood pressure among other things. Omaha cannot boast about its weather or beaches; however, a healthier, less stressful environment gives it some bragging rights.
