ENHANCING RECRUITMENT OF TALENTED PROFESSIONALS TO UNMC
THROUGH PROMOTING OMAHA AS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE PROBLEM

Attracting talented individuals to UNMC includes promoting Omaha as a great place to live. UNMC has no problem recruiting talent; however, living in a small city like Omaha seemingly does not have the same appeal as some larger cities.

BACKGROUND

Individuals who decline employment offers from UNMC primarily cite low salary as a deciding factor. Similarly, negative views of environmental features create doubt about the viability of calling Omaha home.

DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

The following tables compare these factors in Omaha, Nebraska; Chicago, Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, California; and Los Angeles, California. An additional table compares round trip commute times.

• Table 1 displays the salary equivalent to $100,000 for each of the six cities.

• Table 2 presents the difference in living expenses compared to Omaha.

• Table 3 compares climate and precipitation for each city.

• Table 4 compares commute times in each city.

Compared to Omaha, housing expense is significantly higher in all of the selected cities. A $250,000 home in Omaha would cost $412,500 in Chicago, $575,000 in Boston, $637,500 in Los Angeles, $750,000 in Washington, DC, and nearly a million dollars in San Francisco at $962,500. It’s easy to see why salaries are higher in these areas. According to Team Tony on Tony Robbins Blog, moving to a more affordable city can put a person on the fast track to financial freedom. Team Tony also contends that you don’t need to sacrifice your quality of life to do

The City of Kelsey, “a great place to grow.” M. Kelsey founded the City of Kelsey in 1932. M Kelsey had the vision to preserve the natural resources of the land and maintain a “close-knit” community. This city is like any other city, with businesses, schools, citizens, government, recreation, parks, transportation, and issues-all of which I will discuss within this paper (Apollo Group, Inc, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008 ).…

Seccombe (2006) writes that “the United States currently faces a severely limited supply of affordable housing units” (p. 73). Ehrenreich, in her attempt to find somewhat affordable housing, definitely experienced the effects of this housing shortage. For instance, in order to pay only $500 dollars a month as opposed to $675 dollars in Key West, she had to move even further away from town, resulting in a commute that would take approximately forty-five minutes (Ehrenreich, 2001, p. 12). In Portland, Maine, Ehrenreich comes across the same dilemma when trying to find affordable housing located near town. She found that “the only low-rent options seem to be clustered in an area about a thirty-minute drive south” (Ehrenreich, 2001, p. 55). One can only imagine the additional costs that would be incurred if a person even deeper in poverty could not afford the luxury of a car for transportation purposes.…

For most low wage jobs you acquire $6-$7 an hour, therefore you must work tirelessly for hours on end just to make ends meet. To rent a one bedroom apartment in a lowly populated city the minimum pricing is about $600 a month if you're lucky enough to find an available affordable apartment. Even if you work for 9 hours each day everyday for a week you will make a minimum of $378 (based off of a $6 per hour wage) and a maximum of about $441 (based off of a $7 per hour wage), this wouldnt make for enough to pay for a low cost, one bedroom living space, in a run down part of town and leave you enough to still buy groceries and food to feed yourself. Ehrenreich also writes “Something is wrong, very wrong, when a single person in good health, a person who in addition possesses a working car, can barely support herself by the sweat of her brow. You don’t need a degree in economics to see that wages are too low and rents too high.”. Not only are rents too high prices in general are so inflated its unbelievable. To be able to climb the social and economic…

There are many different things you need to access at when picking a place to live, but the most important thing you need to access is yourself. You need to see where you are at in your life and make sure that your making a wise decision. The first thing you need to look at is your job. You need to make sure that you like your job and that you are going to be working in the same location for the next few years. You also need to make sure you have job security that way you will be able to keep up with your payments. Another thing people need to consider is their personal lives. Your age and relationship status are major factors that need to be considered when deciding where you live. For example a single 26 year old probably doesn’t need to live in a big house with three bathrooms; but a married 26 year old with a baby on the way does. You also need to look at the housing market and decide whether or not it is a good time to purchase a home. You don’t want to buy a house that is at its peak-selling price, because if you ever decide to move you will probably lose money in the sale.…
