Edgewood Lake Hospital (ELH) which opened in 1945, is a 30-bed, independent, not-for-profit hospital located in rural northern California. It provides inpatient and outpatient services to the close-knit community that resides within the forested and lakeside town the facility is nestled in. Although it is known for its great track record for quality and is held in high regard by the surrounding community, it has steadily experienced financial losses from 2006 through 2009. The Center for Disease Control recommends the public to get an annual flu shot. If each person on campus were to get vaccinated they would be protected and prevent those who are more vulnerable to catching the virus. According to the Center for Disease Control, there is a 71% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults of all ages because of the influenza vaccine. However, if some people do catch influenza the vaccine will make the illness less mild. USF should promote influenza vaccines to students, faculty and staff by offering the vaccine on campus at the USF Health Clinic. The vaccine offered will be convenient to those who do not have a motor vehicle. In addition, USF can work with health departments to reduce the price of…
The case involves Dr. Barret Rollins, Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for the Dana- Faber Cancer Institute, and Diana Cohn, a member of the institute board of trustees. On October 14, 2010 Dr. Rollins received a call from Diana Cohn expressing her concern about the lack of progress regarding the NIH Grant, largely due to miscommunication and lack of collaboration between centers of the institute. Diana Cohn’s remarks stem from dealing with her husband’s battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme, the deadliest type form of brain cancer. There was no cure for her husband’s cancer but research was conducted by the Institute to find a potential cure or treatments for individuals who suffered from the same disease. After hearing Dana Cohn’s…
Jude’s global impact is just as huge, if not bigger, as their economy impact. They create more clinical trials for cancer than any other children’s hospital. They freely share research information so that other doctors and scientists can use the information to save even more children around the world (St. Jude, 2017). For example, one of the projects that St. Jude has shared is the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project. This project would lead to the discovering of genetic origins in childhood cancer and the finding of new cures. By sharing such findings, St. Jude is helping other hospitals and institutions worldwide to make advances in curing childhood cancer (St. Jude, 2017). The hospital would also expand their International Outreach Program. They are also funding a global clinical research association. The hospital would set standards for the use of precision medicine to treat childhood cancers and establish a world-class cancer immunotherapy program (Charlier, 2015). In addition, St. Jude would develop an authoritative online site. The site is where cancer patients and their families from all over the world can go and find out where the nearest treatment site is, what is expected after being diagnosis or after treatment, as well as other information. The hospital is also looking for approval to become a degree-granting institution for graduate students who are studying biomedical research (Charlier,…

The history of the Dana-Faber is intimately tied to history of its funding. Initial funding for the Children’s Cancer Research Foundation came from the Variety Club of New England. In 1948, the Variety Club organized a radio broadcast from the bedside of a young patient with lymphoma known as “Jimmy” as he was visited by members of the Boston Braves baseball team. The donations that poured in to buy Jimmy a TV set on which to watch Braves’ games were the beginning of the subsequently became the official charity of the Boston Red Sox, Ted Williams and the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association. In 1974, the institution’s name was changed to the Sidney Faber Cancer Center to honor its founder, and in 1983, the name was changed to the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute to acknowledge the major contributions made over twenty years by the Charles A. Dana Foundation.…

In the United States alone, there are roughly 48 million people who do not have access to medical care. Even with constant reports from the media, knowledge of who tends to their care is relatively unknown outside of the medical field. When my parents opened their home health agency back in 2010, I never realized how much of an impact it would have on me in the years to come. With my father’s background of entrepreneurship for over 20 years and my mother’s background of nursing, they combined their strengths to startup a business designed to take care of underprivileged people without access to hospitals. With 80% of their patients under the poverty line, their compassion to care for those in need continues to inspire me everyday. Consequently,…
