Stridor is an abnormal, usually high-pitched sound made while breathing. This sound develops when an airway becomes partly blocked or narrowed. Many things can cause stridor, including:
Something getting stuck in the throat, nose, or airway (foreign body).
Swelling of the upper airway, tonsils, or epiglottis.
An infected area that contains a collection of pus and debris (abscess) on the tonsils.
A tumor.
A developmental problem, such as laryngomalacia.
An injury to the voice box. This can happen when an child has had a breathing tube in place for a few weeks or longer.
An abnormality of blood vessels in the neck or chest.
Acid reflux.
Allergies.
