Jorge is 28-years old male who grew up Catholic in a traditional Mexican family. He works hard and saves his money. He wants a conventional monogamous relationship, eventual marriage and a family. Tina loves Jorge but isn't interested in a conventional relationship. Social Worker role: In our role play, the therapist (Irma) was able to stay neutral by giving each client the time to voice their opinions. Each was able to air their views of the problem and respond to one another's comments. The therapist then went on to ask what each client "liked about the other", to focus on some positive aspects of the relationship. This helped to remind the clients why they first fell in love and lightened the mood enough for the couple to consider compromise.
Assessment: According to Emotional Systems theory, a person's personality and patterns of interaction have their origins in previous generations. This helps to explain why Jorge needs his and Tina's relationship to become more traditional. Tina may have experienced some emotional fusion as a child, leading to her emotional cutoff from past traditions. Her need for differentiation explains why freedom and individuality are so important to her. Tina and Jorge are using a third party (the therapist) for ventilation, mediation and problem solving, which is a healthy use of a triangle.
