Transitions can be a challenge to many, especially to one’s health. New situations or surroundings can cause anxiety, stress, and even depression. In one such case, nineteen-year-old Mariella, we see that this can have a great effect on ones mental and physical being. Mariella is in her second semester of college and finds herself in a funk. She has trouble focusing, finding the energy to interact with her duties, even seems to be losing her appetite (Kearney & Trull, 2018). Even after some time away on leave from school, Mariella finds that she is not herself and continues to struggle to understand what is wrong. Transitions can be hard. When one goes from the safety of high school, where everyone and everything is familiar over a four-year period, to a major university that is vast and complicated and more than double the number of students, one can easily find themselves out of their element. In many cases students, such as Mariella, tend to take on a higher work load then they are used to in a high school setting. With class demands and material that are far more advance then what one had in the past. Relationships to tend to be different than those prior to college. Social dynamics can change rapidly and making friends may come with difficulty.
What should Mariella do? It is obvious that Mariella knows something is not right (Kearney & Trull, 2018). This gives her a great advantage to seek out some guidance. By seeking a student advisor or mental health advocate in her school, Mariella can begin to understand what she is experiencing and begin to take steps to return to her normal being.
Which aspect of this is cause for the most concern? One can easily see that the isolation Mariella is in can be of major concern. When one is going through depression, which certainly seems to be the case here, isolation can lead to some dangerous situations such as inflicting bodily harm onto oneself.
