The aim of the project is to find a manual handling aid that will effectively assist a service user to get off the floor if they have a fall. I am basing the project on the care home where I work. I work in a residential home that supports 20 people. We have no means of getting manual handling equipment such as a hoist or stand aid in the lift so I have decided to look into purchasing an Elk. This device will assist a service user off the floor in a limited space effectively.…

In this memoir all the Jews are put into concentration camps because Hitler despises Jews. The Jews struggle to hold on to their humanity. The equipment could consist of wheelchairs, hoists, electrical equipment or even a bed. If something were to happen; for example, a carer not using a hoist correctly, then the service user could be at risk of developing bruises and minor or major cuts, in some extensive cases the patient could even end up being crushed by the hoist. Sometimes, it will not always be the carers fault, the hoist could be used without a carer knowing it is broken. The possible causes of a service user being hurt by a hoist could be because of the lack of maintenance and thorough examination or the patient could get caught between two different moving parts. This is a hazard for elderly people because when you get older, your bones become fragile and even the slightest fall could result in a major injury. To prevent this from happening, the Care Home should ensure that all equipment (even the least important) should have maintenance checks to make sure all equipment is fully working and even the slightest error with equipment should be checked over and fixed IMMEDIATELY. If their equipment is likely to break and get damaged then the Care Home should invest in some better quality hoists from somewhere that is a well known brand. If a service user is at risk with the equipment then the Care Home could therefore risk being sued by the family of that service user because the patient could get seriously…

It is essential that people are moved and handled in a sensitive and safe way. This is also vital for you as a worker, to prevent injury to yourself. It is possible to minimise the risk to both you and the people whom you support by following the correct procedures and using the right equipment.…

Growing up our body experience a lot of changes. As we age, our bodies develop in order to be stronger. However, as we get older our bodies start to deteriorate; if not maintained properly it becomes fragile. It is not uncommon for older adults in their nineties to still be walking, but a single slip or fall could take that independence away. “Falls are the most common cause of accidental death among older adults and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality.” (Stubbs, 2011, p.1). With an increasing older adult population there is higher stress on the long term health care system, such as longer term care facilities, slow stream rehab units, and hospitals. As this demand persist, a higher stress on the institutions and their workers may lead to older adult neglect and an overall inferior quality of care. There are several reasons why falls are becoming more frequent for the elderly but they can be prevented by carefully managing the fall risks and creating a prevention program that should be implemented in order to reduce the number of falls in older adults.…
