In the poem “Casey at the Bat” the setting and plot effects the character Casey in different
ways. The poem shows him as being one thing that he really isn't. As the story proceeds the
problem begins to change how he is acting. In the end Casey is not as mighty as he is known to be
or as mighty as he acts.
As mentioned before, Casey is known as something he may not be. In the poem he is supposed to be the one who wins the game for the team. For example “For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to bat.” This shows that the fans and his teammates knew he was one of the best players on the team. Casey was their last hope
but would the spotlight hurt his chance of a home run?
Likewise, something does begin to affect him because he gets a strike. Since the fans adore him and trust him they act as if he wanted to miss. Like stated in the poem “That ain't my style” Casey said as the umpire said “Strike One! This was nothing to the crowd as soon soon as Casey gave them a “smile of Christian charity”. He showed the crowd that there is nothing to worry and they trusted him.
Consequently, in the end of the poem Casey strikes out and loses the game.” The sneer in Casey’s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate”, this describes the moment when Casey realizes that this is his last chance to make a home run. When Casey first comes to the bat he is very confident but when it all comes down to the last hit he is actually worried.
In the end, Casey was not the as mighty as he used to be. He was put under pressure and he then showed his true colors and that didn't work out for him as he and everyone else thought it would. Casey showed throughout this poem that sometimes when there is a risk that his reputation is on the line he doesn’t like to show it, even when he is worried. At the end of the day when you have been known as one great thing you wouldn't want to be seen as something bad.
