The poems ‘the Cremation of Sam McGee’ and ‘Casey at the Bat’ were both made in the turn of the 20th century. The poet Ernest Thayer wrote the poem ‘Casey at the Bat’ in 1888. Eventually, it became a Ballad of the Republic that was sung in the match. The majority of Casey at the Bat had an exciting, upbeat, and family oriented aesthetic. It takes us to the baseball game with Mudville at home playing against the away team.…

Finally, Thayer uses the imagery of Casey’s mighty swing to build suspense. Thayer leaves the reader with the image of Casey’s swing without knowing whether or not Casey struck out or won the game. The author uses the words “shattered” and “blow” to mislead the reader. The poem says, “And now the air is shattered by the force of Casey’s blow” (“Casey at the Bat” 48). The reader is hopeful…

A.) As Casey stepped up to the plate there was pride in his eyes and a smile on his face. B.) I would say Casey is cocky. He steps up to the plate knowing he is going to get a hit. He has a sneer in his lip when he looks at the pitcher and remains calm the whole time he is at bat. My opinion overall of Casey is that he is a player who thinks he is better than he is.…

The last main element of poetry that was used in, “The Analysis of Baseball” is Metaphors. One example of a metaphor is when May Swenson says, “Bat waits for ball to mate. Ball hates to take bats bait.” In that verse May Swenson is saying that the batter has swung and missed the ball and now has a strike because the bat wants to mate but…

Updike makes his theme clear with the tone of the poem. He makes it seem calm but at the same time the poem is depressing because the reader feels pitty for Flick and how his life has changed. Updike uses many other literary devices in the poem to make the theme clear also.“His hands were like wild birds” (18) this is a simile explaining that Flick’s hands were graceful and free, yet in control like how Flick was with the basketball. “Idiot pumps” (7) the gas pumps are idiots standing motionless and oblivious while Flick dribbles and works around them, this metaphor again symbolizes Flick remembering his basketball days. Updike also uses personification to convey the theme,“The ball loved Flick" (16) this shows how close Flick was with his love of basketball. All the literary devices in the poem show the reader how Flick is feeling and give the reader an intake on Flicks everyday life.…

Choose someone to fight me,” in the poem “Casey at the Bat” the poem goes, that Casey is the best player and if he can get a run his team will win the game. From the story “David and Goliath” David had the task of defeating Goliath if he did not his people would become slaves, and in “Casey at the Bat” Casey was put under the pressure of thousands to get a hit so their team could win the ballgame. Last but not least David and Casey were both confident. The “Casey at the Bat” the poet said “There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile on Casey’s face,” and in “David and Goliath” David approached Goliath with confidence in him. This proves my point because it shows the emotions showed by both characters. These two tales also have many contrasts. The first difference is that Casey failed and David was successful. In the poem “Casey at the Bat” in the last line it says “But there is no joy in Mudville – mighty Casey has struck out,” in the story “David and Goliath it said “David defeated Goliath with a sling and a rock. He killed him without even using a sword.” An excerpt of “Casey at the Bat” can say that Casey failed by striking out, “In David and Goliath” David succeeded by killing…

With figurative language, James Hurst can successfully set the mood of the story. “. . . the flowers’ smell speaking softly the names of our dead. . . ,“ is a prime example, as it sets the gloomy mood for that scene in the passage. It fills the scene with thoughts of the boy’s deceased relatives and his sadness as he will never see them again. Similarly, he uses figurative language to set a mood of fear in the story’s darkest hour. “. . . like a bursting Roman candle, a gum tree ahead of [them] was shattered by a bolt of lightning.” With danger all around the brothers, an exploding gum tree directly in front of them fills their hearts with terror. This successfully sets the state of thought for the characters and reader in this event. Although figurative language is used to provide imagery for the story, it is also used to foretell Doodle’s death.…

The diction in this poem prepares the reader for the speaker's concluding response because it shows that the speaker remembers the event very vividly; therefore it must be a very significant event in his life. An example of this is when he describes a cloud as "paled, pulsed, compressed, distended" (line 20). Another example is when he describes the flocks of flying geese as "great straggling V's" (line 9). Also, when the speaker says "as if out of the Bible or science fiction" it lets the reader know that the event is…

The more experienced an individual, the darker it appears. Annie Drew’s use of matches created a darkening path in an autumn forest. The further down the path, the darker the color, the heavier the tone, the smoother the texture. In the poem Old Men Playing Basketball, B. H. Fairchild suggests that there is an eventual downfall to all lives; they try to reclaim their competence but doing so only evokes the nostalgia for the lost youth. Through the scene of old men basketball, Fairchild captures the details of the old men’s unfitness and laments on the speed that life decays at and the inabilities that comes with aging as memories of their younger self are still fresh. Though the old men can never be young again, memories…
