1. Key questions that need to be addressed if the company decides to look further unto the possibility of marketing to the BOP segment.
Mercadear al BOP requiere de muchas consideraciones que dependerán del tipo de producto, el poder adquisitivo de las personas de la región, sus necesidades peculiares, infraestructura, canales de distribución entre otros. Basado en esto, algunas preguntas guías podrían ser:
a. Producto:
 ¿Qué productos necesitan?
 Empaque
 Productos radicales- modificaciones al producto o empaque actual
 Precio
 Funciones / usos
 Si el producto puede funcionar en condiciones hostiles, ruidosas, con poca sanidad
 Educación sobre el producto- si les hace falta
 Adaptabilidad
 Eco-friendly products
b. Tecnología:
 Si necesitan energía y quien suple si es necesaria
 Si se pueden unir o necesitas una nueva… fusionar
c. Métodos de distribución:
 Transportación disponible - medios de transporte
 Carreteras
d. Logística e infraestructura:
 Quien lo va a vender
 Como lo va a vender
 Donde se va a vender
e. Servicio al cliente
 Quien aclara dudas
 Educación sobre necesidad y usos
 Quien ayuda
f. Arquitectura futura:
 si necesitaras cambiar
 incorporación de nuevos atributos del producto

En resumen, es probable que para entrar al BOP un producto tenga que ser re-evaluado en cuanto a su función, uso, tamaño, empaque y adaptabilidad por mencionar algunos detalles. Es por esto que se requiere de una investigación de mercado para identificar esos aspectos, incluyendo la distribución y entrega, que determinaran la viabilidad de un producto o servicio.

    BOP or Bottom of pyramid is a socio economic term given for the strata of low income people in the income pyramid (used to approximate the distribution of a country’s income). Thus obviously Bottom of Pyramid constitutes the market made of country’s poorest people. In India approximately 6 Lacs villages and 72% of country’s population constitutes BOP. The great majority of men and women of this BOP cluster work in agriculture, animal husbandry, factories or own rural shops and their income levels less than Rs.1.5 Lacs/year.
