Estimada Sra. Leister:

An introduction to Cosi ouis Nowra was inspired to write Cosi after a visit to a performance of Hello Dolly with a group of mental patients in 1970. He worked with this group of patients to produce a version of Trial By Jury which helped many of the patients to “blossom” and also revealed the ignorance of a student leader who ridiculed the patients’ efforts. Nowra claims that the play is a combination of fact and fiction. In Cosi, a mature Nowra looks back and evaluates his youthful self and the political environment in which he grew up. Lewis is a naive young director who is faced with the daunting task of directing a group of mental patients in a play. Cosi Fan Tutte is chosen by the exuberant and forceful Roy who overwhelms the inexperienced Lewis. The rest of the cast is less enthusiastic particularly as the play seems to demand an ability to sing and speak Italian. Roy prevails and Lewis is required to work with a motley cast of characters in a run-down theatre so that Roy’s dream can become a reality. The time Lewis spends with Doug, the pyromaniac, Cherry, the nymphomaniac, Julie, a drug addict, Ruth, a dogged realist, the introverted and silent Henry, the Lithium-addicted pianist Zac, and Roy, the exuberant dreamer, proves to be a humanising experience for Lewis. This experience has repercussions for his personal life as he copes with the contempt and criticism of his girlfriend Lucy and his politically obsessed friend, Nick. Lucy’s betrayal, Lewis’ attraction to Julie and his growing sense of alienation from the political preoccupation of the 1970s all forms part of the fabric of the play as does the performance of Cosi Fan Tutte itself. Structurally, the play uses the device of the play-within-a-play to comment on the drama which is taking place in Lewis’s life outside the theatre and between the “outside” characters, Nick and Lucy, and the inmates. The themes of love and fidelity which are the concerns of Cosi Fan Tutte are played out in the real life…

The play ‘Cosi’ composed by Louis Nowra and set in Melbourne during the early 1970’s allows the audience to reflect on what it mean to be an Australian in the era and in modern times. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Lewis and his conflicting relationships with the mental patients he meets while directing the play ‘Cosi Fan Tutte’ and his own personal relationships, the audience examines the notion of inner growth in young people as they navigate their way into adulthood. The audience is also forced to look at the opposing views of love and fidelity as represented by Lewis and the minor characters. Through the use of the backdrop of the Vietnam Way and the turmoil of 1970’s, the audience is also asked to reflect on Australia’s changing identity through the treatment of the mentally ill and the tension caused by the war in Vietnam. This is most clearly highlighted through symbolic use of lighting and set design and emotive language.…

Louis Nowra’s play, Cosi, is set in the 1970s, during the Vietnam War. The setting is in a mental institution. It was written in 1992. Cosi explores a range of ideas and attitudes towards mental illness, such as the stereotypical view that mental patients are dangerous and should be kept locked away. Another is that they are like a lot of other people who are considered “normal”. But the stereotypical view is generally the constant throughout this play. Nowra’s play addresses an issue which is still present in today’s modern society. That is the belief that women are not to be trusted when it comes to committing to a relationship.…

Throughout the play ‘Cosi’, the audience witness the lives of mentally ill people unfold before them. In the opening scenes of the play, audiences encounter a naive and inexperienced Lewis who is easily influenced by the views of his university friends. We first meet Lewis and friends in a ‘pitch black’ theatre in which the darkness symbolises their narrow minded outlooks. This foreshadows that Lewis compliantly conforms to the rigid but shallow expectations and philosophies of others. Indeed, he mouths various left wing student political slogans in these early scenes. His preconceived trendy left ideas about doing a Brecht play about how ‘a man sacrifices himself for the good of his mates’ are quickly dismissed by Roy, who bullies Lewis into directing Cosi Fan Tutte and ignores his couations about the appropriateness of the light oopera in the time of theVietnam War and a world where love is no longer ‘important’. In the initial rehearsals, Lewis’ uncertainty and inexperience cause tension ‘.........they are waiting for some leadership from Lewis who................doesn’t know where to begin.’ Later the play proves to be a pivotal turning point for Lewis as Roy continues to heckle him to show direction and leadership. In these opening scenes, we witness Lewis’ discomfort and awkwardness with the patients. He is confronted by Doug’s blunt personal questions and Cherry’s amorous advances; he doesn’t know how to deal with Roy’s dominance. His understanding of others and interpersonal abilities are limited. At this point in the play, Lewis appears one dimensional and the situation is set for his transformation into a more rounded individual.…

One of the main themes of Cosi is the question of love and fidelity. This is shown in Act 1 Scene Two when Doug, who hates women, says: " Women like to pretend they dont play around but theyre just more secretive about it." Cherry and Ruth are very negative about sex, stating that most women work hard to keep men out of their pants. Julie thinks that love is "being foolish and stupid". Also the play that Lewis is directing, Cosi Fan tutte is all about love and fidelity. Lewis is also questioning the love and fidelity of his girlfriend as she is critical of love and of his work with the mental patients.…
