Needs and wants are defined by many different things. Needs are considered the things that are necessary for an individual to survive or to reach their personal purpose in life. On the other hand a want is a desire to have or do something. Throughout the film ‘Castaway’ by the director Robert Zemeckis, the theme of satisfying needs and wants as well as using resources in order to survive is portrayed in many various ways by the main character Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) as he finds himself stranded on an island for four years after his plane crashed over the south pacific.
In ‘Castaway’ the film explores the physical and inner journey of Chuck Noland, who was a successful FedEx executive, the plane was crashed by a lighting storm, now Chuck must transform himself physically and emotionally to survive the challenges and obstacles that lay in front of him on the island as he is the only survivor. He needs to find a way to attract help.
Before Chuck became stranded on the island he took many things for granted. These things include having the luxury of having food and water whenever and wherever he went, having a home with a bed and a shower, having unlimited clothing and being able to interact with people. In many cases we also see Chuck taking for granted his family as he would put work above them.
Chuck had various wants before the island as well; they consisted of having everything in order and in control not only at work but in his home life as well. Chuck would time everything timed to the last second to ensure everything would make deadlines and so that his life stayed in order.
After being deserted on the island chucks needs and wants changed dramatically, for example he was desperately in need of a social life, clothing, shelter, food and water.
