For many years catapults have been used in time as a weapon of destruction. Over time many catapults have been invented. The word catapult came from the Greek word “Katapultos”. Which leads us to the first catapult make. Around 400 BC in the town of Syracus the “Gastraphete” was made. This catapult looked something like a giant cross bow and was made for major destruction. During Medieval times catapults were very common in siege warfare. The most commonly used catapult was a trebuchet. The first trebuchet clearly recorded was in 1187 by a Islamic scholar by the name of Mordi Al-Tarrui. He wrote “trebuchet are machines made by unbelieving devils.” The trebuchet appeared in Christian and Muslim lands. The Greeks took
defense to a whole new level. They improved the Gastraphete by making it larger and much improved. They gave it the name “Ballista”. These are just some of the catapults made in history. There are many catapult type and each having a different design, method of firing and martials it’s made of. Catapults are usually made of wood, steel, and rope. Catapults can be made in any size. The types of catapults very from crossbow looking ones to the fascinating Da Vinci Catapult.
