(Joseph Heller, Page 29-Catch 22) The compelling story of Catch 22 had me on edge every step of the way. This being said, I would hesitate to recommend this book to anyone under the age of 14. This book seems to be targeted to more mature audiences due to the sometimes disturbing material. With gory yet thrilling details, and some moments of sexual content, this isn't a book for the faint of heart.
There are several reasons why I would recommend Catch 22 to an older student. I found the book to be funny in a dark sort of way, but it also kept me interested in such a bizarre storyline and colorful characters. The story follows the life of a young bombardier named Yossarian. He is a young age of 28 and seems to be in over his head with the tasks that are required of him to fight in a war. He is friendly only with his close circle of friends and is portrayed as the anti-hero in this story. The reason for this is because even though he lies, cheats and steals, he is also a victim of the craziness of war. In the beginning of the book, Yossarian is traumatized because there was a bombing mission that he was in charge and one of his fellow bombers was killed during this mission. Yossarian feels responsible for the death of this fellow pilot and he gets desensitized by the war and tries to stay alive. He flies his missions and does his duties until one day when the troops of bombardiers were close to getting all of their missions done so they could go home the committee raised his missions. Meanwhile, Yossarian thought nothing of it at first until it became a continuous ordeal. It happened so much that the more and more flights they made the madder the pilots became. Yossarian was soon grounded because he was supposedly “sick” and the doctors did not want him to go on any more missions until he got better. He soon found out that he could still go on missions because he really was not sick. He soon started doing his missions until one day the doctors told him that he was crazy. He also could be
