Censorship is diverse for many people. Censorship is a big problem and is known all over the whole world. It all starts with people over the whole world and it hurts people, kids, and students. Cather in the Rye opened me up to censorship and I think it’s not fair and it should not be allowed. Censorship can be defined as the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as determined by a government, media, outlet, or other controlling body. Challenges are brought about by religious rights groups and parents because they refer to certain novels as anti-Christian (Durbin) (Page 49 & 50). Those challenges are not right to parents because the kids might not have the same views as the parents and they might want to read a certain book that the parents don’t think is right or unchristian. Some books have been attacked for being “controversial”, suggesting that for some people the purpose of education is not the investigation of ideas but rather the indoctrination of certain set beliefs and standards (NCTE) (Page 1). Schools have removed censored books; English teachers only use recommended books. Students consequently educate in a school atmosphere hostile to free inquiry (NCTE) (Page 2) It’s not fair to us kids not to be able to have our laws in schools, but to make it worse we shed our rights as soon as we enter school it’s not right and we should not have to deal with it.
