He isn't able to concentrate or relax without having a cigarette due to the fact that he has anxiety. He often tend to overthink stuff and show that he is nervous. He first starts with questioning Stradlater as he doges his questions, Holden get anxious and starts to offend Stradlater causing him to get in a big fight and getting beat up.
