Catcher In The Rye Dialectical Journal Analysis
Journal #1: Just the Way I liked it
When Holden was in New York, he purchased the red hat when he got out of the subway in a sporting goods store. He wears his hat by swinging the peaks around the back. Holden always wears his in different ways, either the correct way or backwards. The hat symbolizes uniqueness, individuality, and confidence. When he wears it towards the back means that he is frustrated or mad. His red hunting has is red with long peaks. The purpose of the hat is to make himself comfortable through tough moments. “The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I'll admit, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way. “ “I pulled the peaks towards the front allof a sudden, for a change. I was

He enjoys the memories he had with his school field trips and remembers everything and what he did there with his classmates. He realizes that the children who visited the museum along with him changed because in real life nothing stays the same. His favorite room was the “Indian Room”, it was a long hallway that leads you to the Native American displays. “You could go there a hundred of times, and that Eskimo would still be on their way south, the deers would still be drinking out of the water hole….”A place that I feel safe and happy would be my aunts house. This would be because being able to see and interact with my cousin and catch up always feels good to do. Having someone that you can talk to and at the same time be comfortable. We always make sure we are having a great day. The museum signifies to the world Holden wishes to …show more content…
The hat symbolizes his independence and confidence he has. Allie’s baseball mitt symbolizes his love for his brother to have as a memory. The museum symbolizes Holden’s childhood and wants everything to stay the same. Everytime Holden returns to the museum he has changed his personality. Holden wants to live in a fantasy world like “Catcher in the rye”. Holden does not want to grow up and wants his sister to remain with her innocence. I think that he thinks this way of wanting everything to remain the same because he misses his brother. After his death, Holden's childhood was ruin and can not make it up. He wishes his brother to be back with him but only has the memories they

Holden Caulfield’s red hunting cap is a symbol for his individuality. Caulfield only wears his hat when he “d[oes]n't give a damn how [he] look[s]” and when he knows “[he] wouldn’t meet anybody that kn[ows] [him]” (88, 122). Caulfield is insecure about himself--this is demonstrated by his inability to connect well with others--and his “corny” hat is one of his insecurities (18). Despite how insecure he is about his individuality--and subsequently his hat--he still keeps it close by. Most of time, the hat is in Caulfield’s “pocket” (53). When Phoebe “put [the hunting hat] on [his] head,” she is telling Caulfield that she accepts him as an individual--quirky hat and all (212).…

The cap, first mentioned in chapter 3 when Holden returns to his room after visiting his professor, embodies several of Holden's internal struggles. The color red, a color that does not easily go unnoticed, points to one of Holden's biggest fears, which is disappearing, as he grows older. This fear stems from the death of his younger brother Allie who died at the age of 11. The colour of the cap also reflects Holden’s younger brother and sister, Allie’s and Phoebe’s red hair. The color red also symbolizes Holden's strong feelings towards growing up. The appearance of the hat "with one of those very, very long peaks" is different than a common baseball cap (Salinger 17). Holden is drawn to this because part of him yearns to be different than his…

In chapters 9 through 12, I feel that a lot of my strengths of my journal are identifying symbols and their meanings for Holden. There are quite a few examples in these four chapters; for example, the ducks in the pond, Phoebe, and not calling Jane. However, I struggled with finding out why Holden keeps mentioning ducks and the pond; I have not yet found out by my own yet, but I think I’m getting close. From class discussion, it seems that some people think that Holden can be the duck. He can be seen as the duck in which ducks migrate when it’s winter. In this case, the duck is Holden and the winter is growing up. He is purposefully isolating himself, so that the winter/ adulthood doesn’t get to him. I will try to build more on the theme of isolation and symbols in the next few chapters.…

In the letter from Scout to Jem, we see Scout's’ point of view and how she feels. It shows that she is sad that Boo gave them so much and they did not give him anything in return like a good neighbor should have. To convey this, a flowery background symbolizes a neighbor's job to look after one another and the items in the pouch exhibits what Scout and Jem were given I feel that this establishes a feeling of growing maturity because the flowery background also symbolizes the growth of a young girl at the stage of coming of age experiences were a young bud becomes a flower not yet too old to shine like glitter which reveals that pouch holding items is like the pouch of a mother kangaroo because they hold their young in that pouch and Boo cares…

There are countless ways to interpret the character of Holden Caufield. I think the best word to describe him is protective. Which leads me to the first innermost circle, the name Holden in a case. Throughout the book, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, Holden has tried to preserve innocence and the case around his name shows his protective personality. Located in the second circle are for me the two most important symbols about Holden in the book. The first item is Allie’s baseball glove; this shows him trying to catch the innocence in that of a young child. Also the glove is a memory of his brother Allie who he was close to and died. The second symbol is a museum; representing holding onto and preserving the innocence in…

In the context of this quote, Holden is referring to his red hunting hat. I have realized, as Holden consistently wears it and mentions it, it is clear that the red hunting hat symbolizes two things. First, Holden’s hat has a very distinct and unique style, qualities that most people wouldn’t be attracted to. I think this represents how Holden is different and likes things most people wouldn’t usually find interesting, for example all the blood (from when he got in a fight with Salinger). Second, Holden wears his hat the same way a catcher would. Towards the end of the novel, Holden tells his younger sister how he would like to save children if they would ever be falling off a cliff, he would be “the catcher in the rye.” Holden’s red hunting…

Before Holden goes on a date, he has the impression that all girls are phonies, and is assured by his opinion after his date with Sally. When Holden takes Sally on a date, he is disgusted with her when she goes to talk to George. For example on page 141, “....The jerk noticed her and came over and said hello. You should've seen the way they said hello. You'd have thought they hadn't seen each other in twenty years. You'd have thought they'd taken baths in the same bathtub or something when they were little kids. Old buddyroos. It was nauseating. The funny part was, they probably met each other just once, at some phony party. He went to Andover. Big, big deal.” (141) Holden was baffled by all of this because they had met just once and Sally…

Upon the novel starting, Holden’s red hunting hat is introduced almost immediately. Holden narrates within the first few pages about his trip to New York City with the fencing team. He explains to the reader of how he lost all of the teams fencing gear, and also elaborates on stumbling across the peculiar, red hat in a store upon departing from the subway after arriving back in Pennsylvania where he attends Pency Prep…

Holden has been through many difficult times in his life, especially after he lost his little brother Allie Caulfield who had pneumonia, but there are these main symbols that describes Holden as a person, his past and most importantly these symbols gives special meaning to his life. After a catastrophe for the fencing team Holden goes on to talk about the hat he bought and not just only then but he tells everyone about it and is quite proud of it. Holden bought his hat while he's in New York after he left the fencing equipment on the subway. As Holden is undressing he brings up the hat, “I put on this hat that I'd bought in New York that morning. It was this red hunting hat”(Salinger 38). After rereading and looking closer to the meaning of each line it's almost as if he want to divert the embarrassment of his mistake. The next lines of text after he continues to talk about how he lost the equipment. “I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after I noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils”(Salinger 38). Holden’s hunting hat helps him to divert the mistake he made to the hat itself. Thinking about the position Holden it it's very easy to understand what he was trying to do when he decided to get this hat. He had just made a very bad mistake forgetting the foils but at the same time he just got kicked out of school and doesn’t have a lot to turn to at the…

Everyone has had a dream job since they were small, it might have changed over time but it was always something they loved. In “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger we meet Holden whose dream job is to be a catcher in the rye. Holden states that in his dream job he would “catch everyone if they start to go over the cliff- I mean if they’re running and they don’t see where they’re going I have to come out of somewhere and catch them.” (Salinger, 173)…

The genuine joy Holden gets from watching Phoebe is a striking image of his fantasies of innocence and his collapsing psyche. For a moment Holden sees the joy that he envisions all the children of his rye field are like. Within Phoebe’s happiness Holden is transfixed and distraught, because the sudden realization that he is transitioning to a world he does not feel equipped for triggers the end of his ambivalence. As the carousel spins so does Holden’s reality, he loses sense of even further sense of himself. The Catcher in the Rye is a bildungsroman, but it is unique in how Holden not only resists growing up, but also he ends the novel more unstable and lost than he started off as. A quest or journey is supposed to lead to a literal or metaphorical…

The top half includes all the things Holden liked through out the novel, all the colour used in the top half is bright such as pink used on the carousel which represent harmony and emothional balance, like how Holden feels happy near the end of the novel. The Museum of Natural History beside the carousel represent another theme, afraid of change, the frozen clock in the middle of the mesuem stand for Holden's thought of wanting to stop the time, and stay as a child forever. The field of rye on the right is obvious from the title of the novel, even though what Holden wants to protect is the childrens not the field of rye but i think that an empty rye field better suits Holden because he has no one to protect and couldn't protect anyone, like rubbing the word in Pheobe's school but was afraid of getting caught. The…
