Sometimes all it takes for something to change in a story is the actions of just one character. In the novel Rules, the character that had the greatest impact was Catherine. The twelve-year-old had made a lot of immense decisions that had most definitely changed her life during the summer. If she had not done what she had did and said, the story would be much more different than how it had actually ended. This essay will explain two critical examples on how Catherine had impacted the story.
To begin with, one example of how Catherine impacted the novel was that she chose to draw a picture of Jason in the clinic one day. She got bored of sitting in the waiting room with her mom and needed something to draw in her sketch pad, so she started drawing a picture of the boy, Jason. However, Catherine definitely made it obvious that she was drawing Jason because she kept staring at him. Seeing that, he wanted to look at the picture, so Catherine decided to finish it up and just give him the picture to keep. His mom was mad “because [even though Jason couldn’t] talk” , she didn’t want her to “assume he [didn’t] mind” (Lord). Catherine chose to start drawing this kid one day at the clinic, which led to the two of them becoming really good friends. Furthermore, she chose to go into the dance with Kristi and not Jason. If she had gone with Kristi, her and Jason would not be friends, and Catherine would be trying to live a normal and perfect life. Catherine wished that everyone could have the same chances and lifestyle, but “it [really] stinks a big one that they [can’t]” (Lord).
