Laura A Lewis’s Hall of Mirrors attempts to explain the social hierarchy of early New Spain society and argues that through sanctioned and unsanctioned domains that dominate every day life; consequently, society’s layer are intertwined and often conflict and influence each other in New Spain society. The term sanctioned domain refers to rules of society that were handed down and enforced from the Spanish government and distributed through the lower rungs of society(5). The term unsanctioned domain pertains to acts that were considered to go against Spanish moral and religious beliefs. Unsanctioned acts consisted of witchcraft which could be broken down into dealings with the devil, and use of “black Magic”(6). Sanctioned and unsanctioned domains are the threads that interlocked all layers of new early Spain society.…
Losing a loved one is difficult, but questioning if they are really or not alive takes a toll on one’s daily life. In Heaven’s Keep, Jo’s plane disappears without a trace and no one can seem to find it until people start digging deeper into the story. Her husband Cork, son Stephen, and family friend Palmer set out to find what really happened on that plane and where Jo really went. Visualizing Aurora, Minnesota, evaluating where the airplane went, and questioning how Jo died is simple because the author used great detail in the book Heaven’s Keep.…
Lewis’ interaction with the patients forces the audience to realise that often the real world is not such a good place.…
Imagery is used very often in the book, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. The important one I believe Mitch Albom used, was when he first described the heavenly Ruby Pier. The smell of the pier was something Mitch brought up many times throughout the story when Eddie mentions it. The pier was, “a place that smelled of cotton candy” Eddie said. So it must have smelt the same. The sky in heaven changed color from pink to leather brown, the pier was new and fresh when Eddie woke up, but it had all the rides it had 75 years ago, not what it had before he died. The sounds weren't very loud, because there was no one there, but when he gets to the sideshow he hears an announcer out of a megaphone describing the Blue Man, even though he…
In the final section of the novel, The Sweet Hereafter, Banks seems to be using the demolition derby setting as a place for everyone to meet and see just exactly how things have changed in the town of Sam Dent since the tragic bus accident that happened the previous winter. It serves as a place that can be compared and contrasted with how the townspeople act this year versus the previous years. It is also a place where most everyone in the town comes annually. It may be told through Dolores' perspective but she gives the reader an idea of exactly how different of an experience it is for her this year from last year. She also eludes through her narration how specific people are different this year.…
The Four Loves, authored by British novelist C.S. Lewis, is often viewed as one of the best books written on the subject of love as it pertains to religion. In the book, Lewis covers many ideas including the four types of love which include: storgé (empathetic love/affection), philia love (the love between friends), Eros (erotic/romantic love), and Agapé (the unconditional ‘God’ love). In this book, Lewis also covers the differences between need and gift love; however, one of the most astounding statements that Lewis makes is in the storgé passage, specifically in the section about affection where he states, “Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.” (pg. 53). Lewis also states, "The highest does not stand without the lowest. (pg.9) If affection is part of storgé, which is considered the lowest love, then to obtain the higher loves one must have affection. Furthermore, storgé (commonly referred to as affection) creates stamina in natural relations between people due precisely to that low-level nature it…

In the story the “Cathedral”, by Raymond Carver, the narrator, Bub is a man of unknowing stuff, and usually assumes things without knowing the knowledge of certain things. For example, Robert a blind man, who visited bub, and his wife, and bub didn’t like the feeling a blind man coming to his home. Robert knew bubs wife from the past from a place where they read stories to blind people. Later in the story bub notices his wife and Robert were talking, and laughing, and just having a good time, which bothered Bub. Lastly, in the story the narrator and Robert had connected in the end by having the narrator drawing the cathedral and having him closing his eyes and that the narrator realized how it feels to be blind and that’s he likes the feeling.…
While some of things we enjoy as mortals get left out of heaven, others we do not enjoy on earth are included in heaven. Naturally, on earth, we can't stand loud, repetitive noise. In our image of heaven, we think about angels singing and playing the harp. It doesn't make sense why we would include something in heaven that we don't enjoy here on earth. Personally, I can't stand repetitive music for more than ten minutes without wanting to go mad. Why would I enjoy it for all eternity? Unless God increased my tolerance for loud noise, I wouldn't be able to stand hearing the same sounds all the…
Heaven exists for the souls that believe that Jesus Christ is their Savior and Hell exists for the souls that have rejected Jesus Christ as their Savior. Anyone can receive the free gift of eternal life that was bought by the death of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). To receive the gift one has to believe and know that God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to this earth to save humanity from their sins through His perfect life, death and resurrection (John 3:16). When one understands what has been done, their life will be forever changed and will be evident through the act of sanctification. Sanctification is the product of a changed heart that their soul will spend eternity with their heavenly. Ultimately, the souls of humanity will end up either in Heaven with God or in Hell separated from God for…

Lewis died as a young man during the peak of his fame, but how exactly did he die? Lewis was an explorer and governor of the state of Louisiana at the time. He went on the Lewis and Clark Expedition and was Jefferson’s right-hand man, helping him prove Congress wrong, saying that they should’ve bought Louisiana for economic and other purposes. As for his death, historians have claimed that he committed suicide while at Grinder’s Stand for over 200 years. However, as we now look back, there are many holes in this claim. Lewis was a superstar back in the day, but he also had struggles and enemies of his own. Lewis died by murder by conspiracy.…
The arts, literature, and other forms of communication can be inherently liberating, as it connects human beings to each other in a way which allows us to share each other’s perceptions, emotions, and experiences. In Azar Nafisi’s, “Selections from Reading Lolita in Tehran,” she clarifies that literature has the ability to reform the foundations of society itself, such as the government in Tehran which repressed the rights of women. Freedom has the power to give salvation to those who suffer from totalitarian control or any type of appalling repression. On the other hand, the author of “The Mind’s Eye: What the Blind See,” Oliver Sacks, explains how blind individuals are repressed from the world, as they are not able to perceive the world around them. However, with the abilities of imagination, these certain individuals were able to create individual worlds in their minds. These individuals’ imagination was used to compensate for their lack of sight. In order for us liberate ourselves, we must use our mind’s imagination from what we learn from literature, the arts, and the surrounding environments around us, so we can be the creators of our own individual worlds and think on a whole different level.…
