Cause and Effect Essay Effects of Sabina’s Upbringing
In the novel, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” by Milan Kundera, the character of the freespirit is portrayed by Sabina. In the novel Sabina lives life betraying everything she knows. For example, she betrayed her parents, her husband, and her country. By betraying all these things, Sabina feels a sense of freedom and it intrigues her to go against everything she has.
In the novel, the way Sabina was raised affected the way she decided to live her life once she became an adult. REsulting in a life of betrayal.
Growing up Sabina was forced to attend church as well as take part in parades. From young age Sabina knew that what was required from her as a child wasn’t what she wanted to do in life. For example, during the parades she would forget the songs they were supposed to sing and fell out of step from all the girls. Resulting in her getting in trouble with her teachers. The only thing she took out from her childhood was painting, which she would learn from watching her father paint. Her father kept her in check, meaning he was strict and wanted her to be the daughter he wanted. At fourteen she fell in love with a boy and her father, out of fear, took her away and instead made her focus on cubism. Once she left for school Sabina felt a sense of freedom and chose to betray everyone and everything she knew.
For a living Sabina became an artist. Being an artist helps Sabina meet many men and it helps her express herself. Unlike her father, Sabina finds Picasso’s work to be interesting and worth looking at. Sabina lives her life moving around and never looking back. She says and does as she pleases without thinking of the consequences. Sabina also lives her life by keeping away
from commotion. She does not like parades nor protests and rather keep to herself. As a child she disliked them as well simply because she was forced into them. Even as an adult
