Cause and Effect essay
1. Cause and effect writing explains why an event happened or what the consequences of such an event.
2. A cause and effect essay can focus on causes, effect or both.
Cause = reason, decision, because,
Effect = is the result of those cause

Practice:
A shopping addiction has some serious effects.

When you write a cause and effect essay, focus on two main tasks.
1. Indicate whether you are focusing on causes, effects, or both. If you do decide to focus on both causes and effects, make sure that your thesis statement indicates your purpose to the reader.
2. Make sure that your causes and effects are valid. You should determine real causes and effects and not simply list things that happened before or after the event. Also, verify that your assumptions are logical.

Illogical: The environment is dying because of cars on the road.
(This is illogical because cars do not necessarily destroy the environment).
Better: The overuse of fossil fuels used in vehicles on the road today is slowly but surely deteriorating the environment.

~ When writing a thesis statement for a cause and effect essay, clearly demonstrates whether the focus in on causes, effects or both
~ Also, make sure you state a controlling idea that expresses your point of view or attitude.
Controlling idea(causes)
~ Ex: There are many reasons for global warming.
Controlling idea(effects)
~ Ex: Global Warming may have a profound influence on our lifestyles.
Controlling idea ( causes and effects )
~ Ex: Global Warming which has developed for many reasons, may have a profound influence on our lifestyles.

1. Remember that “affect” is a verb and “effect” is a noun.
How does the ban on fast food in public schools affect children’s health?
What effects will the ban on fast food in public schools have on children’s health?
2. However, you can use “effect” as a verb that means “to cause or to bring about a change or implement a plan”
