Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States, more than 1,500 people are expected to die from cancer per day. Even though cancer is what some consider “preventable” it is not, there are things you can do to help prevent it, but nothing is going to fully prevent someone from getting cancer. Many treatment plans are available to help those diagnosed with cancer, although they are not guaranteed to cure the cancer. The outcome cancer can have on a person varies, every individuals body and immune system is different. Cancer, one of the most common diseases in the USA, has many causes, treatments, and outcomes.
One of the most common causes of cancer is smoking, cigarettes are known to have over 70 cancer causing chemicals in them that are known to cause cancer. Cyanide, arsenic, and nicotine are some of the few cancer-causing chemicals in Cigarettes. Another cause of cancer is UV Radiation which causes cancer by damaging DNA and the skin from sunburn. Cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are used to treat cancer and in most cases, can cause the body pain and discomfort.
Surgery targets one part of the body and is the easiest procedure even though, recovery can be painful. Most masses of cancer if found in an early stage, can be removed within one surgical procedure, however some may take multiple procedures. Radiation therapy is much like surgery but without the surgical procedure, it is aimed for a certain part of the body and uses high energy waves to destroy the cancer cells. Radiation, and chemotherapy can be used together but are different, chemotherapy targets the whole body and is a mixture of different drugs to help slow down the process of cancer
growth.
The outcome cancer can have on a person varies on the stage of cancer the person has, and age. Age plays a factor in the outcome of cancer, if a child, as well as an elder develops cancer and it’s in a late stage, their chances of survival are low due to their weak immune system. Most people in early stages of cancer can be “cured” and go into remission, which is when a doctor finds no signs of disease in the body, 419,400 Americans are expected to go into remission this year. The most devastating outcome of cancer is death, 7.6 million people die from cancer per year. Cancer, a life threating disease, takes an emotional toll on families and patients each day and year.
