That is exactly why we should not take more risks while driving. Sure it may seem like you have layer of steel protecting you, but when you look at it, there is really not a lot between you and the ground when your going 50 miles an hour. The hazards of not following the rules of the road can be devastating. Not only can unsafe driving cause you to get a ticket and points against your license but it can also cause serious injury and sadly death in some cases. Must accidents are preventable by doing a few small things to insure your safety? I believe I read somewhere that some 95% of all accidents are driver error, which means nearly every single accident that occurs can be prevented by driving safely.…

A lot can happen when a driver is distracted. For example, there is a significant increase in driving with no hands on the wheel, not watching the road, sudden braking and wandering into other lanes which can result in lack of focus on the road, increase the chances of collisions and a hazard to pedestrians, yourself and other road users. I personally witnessed drivers on an everyday basis being distracted while driving on the road. For example, many would be texting or making a phone call, some will be looking somewhere else instead of focusing on the road ahead, and eating or drinking while one hand is on the steering wheel. All of these bad habits are unsafe and could be dangerous and contribute to why we have so many unnecessary accidents on the road…

Distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone, can cause drivers to take their eyes off the road for a few seconds, long enough to have difficulty responding to hazards and staying in their lane. These seemingly innocuous acts also can affect their mental focus. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that cell phone use behind the wheel actually reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent ("A dangerous distraction," 2013). A report from the University of Utah (search) says when motorists between 18 and 25 talk on cell phones, they drive like elderly people — moving and reacting more slowly and increasing their risk of accidents ("Study: Teens on," 2005). It doesn't matter whether the phone is hand-held or hands-free. Any activity requiring a driver to "actively be part of a conversation" likely will impair driving abilities ("Study: Teens on," 2005). A 1997 Canadian study published in The New England Journal of Medicine used phone records to evaluate cell phone use patterns. Crash risk was found to be four times greater when drivers were using a cell phone, whether hand-held or hands-free. A more recent study using simulators published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology reported similar findings ("A dangerous distraction," 2013).…

Distractions affect drivers of all ages, and are one of the leading causes of accidents. I did not think that this was as serious as it sounded until I started driving myself. I noticed that when I talked to my mother while driving I sometimes got enthused, excited or agitated and often swerved or swayed into the next lane or onto the shoulder. I had to learn to talk but keep my focus on the road. Another distraction for me is eating while driving, I tend to follow my food with my eyes and drive with one hand. I can just imagine what I would do if I dropped something on my lap like hot chocolate.…

Other accompanied people in the vehicle can play a major distraction hazard while driving. I recall a time when Josh Taylor, Colten Edmonds, and I were involved in a car accident not too long ago. We were headed back home from the Nacogdoches Mall down University Drive. While we exited the mall entrance, we started talking about a time that I scared my friend Josh. When all of a sudden we looked ahead of us, hit the car breaks, but it was too late. The car slid its way and rammed the back of a Camaro car. Due to our distraction of our conversation we wrecked but luckily no one got hurt that day.…

Inattention: Inattention can be caused by many factors such as fatigue, distractions, or even friends. All those things take away from the attention you should be using for driving; driving requires your full attention because you need to be aware of your surroundings, speed, and where your vehicle is on the road. These are especially necessary during inclimate condition where roads can be slick or visibility can be very poor. Any little distraction to a driver can cause a collision I know people that have been in collisions because something fell over in there trunk and made a noise. The easiest way to reduce collisions caused by Inattention is to make sure there are no or minimal distractions in the vehicle i.e.; turn the radio off and make sure anything in the vehicle is secured so that it can’t shift and distract the driver therefore reducing the chances of being distracted. Another option is to make sure that you are not fatigued to the point that you can concentrate on the driving you are doing.…
