The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a federally run program that protects American consumers against unreasonable risk of deaths or injuries associated with consumer products. The CPSC was created in the 1970’s along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a protection from faulty and unsafe products sold to Americans. One would assume that the same Federal Government that tests toy guns for safety and defects would tests real guns as well. This is just not the case. Thanks to the NRA and gun lobbying, real guns have escaped these regulations …show more content…
Viewing gun death tolls at a social perspective illustrates an eye popping statistics. Cooper writes, “A white man killing himself in Peoria and black teenagers shooting each other on the streets of Chicago are very different [gun safety reforms should reflect this]” (46). Gun fatalities by race show that 82% of gun deaths to blacks is caused by homicide while 77% of gun deaths to whites is caused by suicide. This highlights a glaring social issue. While many aim to rid all gun violence, the cause and root of gun deaths must take center stage. We cannot possibly know how to fix a major issue like gun violence without knowing exactly who, where and why it is happening. It is simple to see and easy to prove that young black men all across the country are killing each other on the streets. Our countries leaders and lawmakers must examine the NRA’s impact on our gun laws and a determination should be made to who do these laws really benefit. Do the laws ultimately benefit the American People or the NRA and its bottom line business. There should be fair laws that benefit both the NRA and the American People. I propose that the NRA must no longer have an impact on gun laws and reform. The Federal Government, at the very least, should have complete oversight of the manufacturing, distribution, tracking of all guns. Also, any modification to any firearm, rifle or handgun, should be made illegal followed by extremely harsh punishments aimed at deterrence. All Federal gun laws should also supersede all state laws. We must also make huge strides and attempts to figure out exactly how many guns are in our population because a plus or minus estimate of 100 million is just not good enough. We must have an accurate count of the number of guns if we look to accurately account for and track those guns. The Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms department of the Federal Government should drop the firearms and firearms should have its own entity charged with complete jurisdiction and oversight of all things firearms. And finally we must look at our black communities
