Unemployment was one of the complications during the Depression. Unemployment skyrocketed from 1929 to 1936 from almost 4% to 23%. There were twice as many African- Americans unemployed. Many couldn’t even pay rent or buy food (Doc 3). People were often thrown into the streets. New Deals like the TVA and the CCC were applied. The TVA stopped floods by building dams. The CCC Built parks and planted trees.
There were Mental and Physical responses
as well. In document 3, one example was that “Vera” couldn’t pay rent due to the depression. When you can’t pay your rent, then eventually you get evicted. Vera was evicted from her apartment eventually and then she was left in the streets to starve. People were often too weak to walk, because they didn’t have as much food or money as people do today.
Poverty and hunger were major problems. When the banks closed and people became broke overnight, there is bound to be complications. People couldn’t pay for simple things like food and clothing. So they starved and wore dirty rags of clothing. Soup kitchens opened up to offer a much needed meal (doc 4). Some restaurants probably offered food for free or little charge. Americans weren’t able to keep their house because they were bankrupt and they had hard times with finding a job.
There have been many hard times in history, however this may be one of the hardest times so far. Millions were homeless or broke. There was a lot of hunger throughout the world. It was a hard time in history, in a way it was a battle that was hard to defeat.
