Progressivism was a political movement in the United States during the ninetieth century to change the social and economic problems within society. The people believed the United States government should be more active about solving society’s problems. Industrialization and urbanization created many of these problems. These included, but were not limited to, poverty of working class and the filth and crime of urban society. Progressive leaders worked as journalists, social workers, educators, politicians, and members of the clergy. Unregulated market and economy were favored by the leaders of progressivism. Before government could fix social problems, government itself needed to be fixed.…
Progressivism generated positive results. If one thinks of progressives as one group of people with one clear objective, then they succeeded. But, consider the word “progressives” as a general term that encompasses these assorted clusters unfairly, because it defines these groups as one. The progressives’ diverse and opposing views break up the previously described group into separate sets of individuals trying to achieve the same goals, in a different way. Because these groups did not agree on how to achieve things in one way, the “progressives” never met some objectives because their contradicting methods resulted in the opposite result. How could every one of these groups do what they set out to? No, they could not possibly have done so.…

At the turn of the 20th century, the toll that years of injustices took on American minority groups rose to a breaking point. The plethora of new technology which arrived post-civil war led to many unaddressed socioeconomic issues (“Progressive Movement.”), which caused many discontent individuals to unite to form malcontent groups. Known as the Progressive Era, the first 20 or so years of the century consisted of movements led primarily by working class citizens, african-americans, and women. The various organizations they formed had a “wide range of positions and goals” (“Progressive Movement.”), but were generally united in their desire for obtaining their inalienable rights. Among the leaders of these groups was Margaret Sanger, an…
The Progressives were led by religious leaders such as Charles Parkhurst, a Protestant Reverend who urged for more “protest” from the Protestants. The Progressive Era united various anti-vice crusaders such as the Anti-Cigarette League, the American Purity Alliance, and the Anti-Saloon League. These groups were already united with many other issues such as labor rights, women’s rights, minimum wage laws, etc. Thus, in 1900, a reform group known as the “New York Committee of Fifteen” conducted undercover investigations and released their first report with the title “The Social Evil.” A similar group with ties to the New York Anti-Saloon League, known as the “Committee of Fourteen,” did a comparable investigation of prostitution three years…
The gilded age had many problems that made people to push to an era with little or no social and political problems. Some of the problems of the gilded age included; the economic retardation of the southern parts of the States, the African-Americans of the south being denied power to take part in political activities, and racism. The problems prevailed after two nationwide panics affected the growth in this period. The gilded period had two noticeable divisions: the Mugwumps who were extremely rich and had no support from most people because they considered elitists (Kunitz, 1974). The other group was the agrarian laborers who lacked power and their movements could not succeed. In the progressive era, the reformers built a coalition, which combined the Mugwumps and the labor unionists. Because of the combination, the coalition was less focused. There were conflicts in the coalitions that led to compromises, little disagreements, and little solutions to the problems (Jeff,…
Imperialism is defined as the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political domination over other nations. Throughout the time period many people considered Imperialism as another way of reform and Progression. Economics, the military, and the countries nationalism were all ready for the change. This idea of expanding was called the New Manifest Destiny. At this time period, Imperialism was getting very popular, and many began to think that the more land a country annexed, the more powerful it was. Expansionists believed that European countries were already rapidly growing spreading across the globe. Also, they saw that if Americans did not join the imperialism rule, it would end up missing out on power, and may be considered a weaker nation. Imperialism was needed for economic gain and America urgently needed foreign trade, especially with China at this time period. In addition, The United States was considered to be a great empire and by not showing their strength and power they might be envisioned as a weak nation. At the same rate, many Americans also saw that if the United States started to take other countries by force, it would go against the ideals of our own country. If economic growth occurred, we would need to build and protect our new empires, and this could very easily be a problem. Three presidents at this time period were very influential in their progressive views. One of these was Theodore Roosevelt. "Speak softly and carry a big stick", a quote by Roosevelt himself, expresses his "Big-stick" diplomacy, stating that the threat of military force would be used to influence politics in other countries. Next, Taft's dollar diplomacy states that money can influence decision-making and that America should expand and invest out of the country. Finally, Wilson believed that Americans should spread the beliefs of human rights, democracy, and word…

During the late 1800’s to early 1900’s many groups and individuals agreed that problems in society could be resolved. Reformers worked to change many aspects of society including politics and economics in the United States. Improving living conditions for those who lived in tenement buildings and the production of pure food were two goals reformers had. Campaigning and settlement houses were some of the methods used to achieve their goals.…
During the progressive era the United States was caught in a forward thinking fever. During this historic time the United States had to progress in social and business settings to keep up with its booming population. During this time people were taking advantage of everyone they could, even committing atrocities towards other human beings. The persecutors of such crimes included everyone from politicians, to businessmen, to everyday people. The progressive leaders of the United States were able to successfully address these social and economic problems through new policies and a contagious progressive attitude.…
The 1800s were a time of swift industrialization for the United States. Brisk changes in industry brought about radical complications in the social, economic and political structure of the country. U.S. Senator Elihu Root spoke of these changes in a 1913 speech, “The real difficulty appears to be that of the new conditions (growing from) the industrial development.” A new group of reformers, labeled the Progressives, rose to power in response to the conflicts. The Progressive Era lasted from 1890 to 1920, with its beginning being that of a social movement and later becoming a political movement.…
The Gilded Age and the Progressive Era were 50 years in which a large wealth gap between the rich and poor increased dramatically and needed a solution, similar to our nation’s situation today. Big corporations in major cities were able to take advantage of a surplus of those in the working class and technological advancements, leading to a select few holding the majority of fortune. There were many resolutions to this gap in wealth coming from powerful people, like Andrew Carnegie, William Sumner, and progressive reformers like Alva Belmont, yet even with successes by the progressive trade unionists and socialists, the end result was inadequate. Due to corruption within the political system and disconnect between those trying to help and those…

Amendments were added to the constitution to protect black people in the south. This was important because they were trying to make the south safe for the blacks.…
There were many changes in the United States throughout the years since it was first founded. Whether they be religious, physical, or economic, depended on the years they were based in. The periods that had some of the most important changes were the 1870’s to the 1930’s. During the years there are different eras, like during the years 1877-1900 we had The Rise of Industrial America which had five sub-eras of events and during the year 1900-1929 we had the Progressive Era to the New Era which had four sub-eras of events. The changes in America were pretty astounding but the focus is the American South.…
