In the article Rock Shelter Painting by American Indian likely circa 1000-1600 the author Morgan Simmons informs the reader of the discovery of an ancient Native American cave painting in Tennessee. Throughout, Simmons utilises ethos and pathos to illustrate her understanding and credibility on the subject. By conferring with a cave specialist, an anthropology professor at the University of Tennessee, and by examining the beliefs and traditions of Native American tribes found in the Cumberland Plateau, Morgan Simmons creates an in-depth understanding of the importance of Native American cave paintings. To being with, the author emphasises the titles and professions of individuals included in the article. An example of this includes Cory Holliday,…
Huge set of cave paintings with many different scenes. Most of them are of cows, bulls, horses, and deer. Negative handprints are the way of showing signatures. The paintings were made to ensure success in hunts, for ancestral animal worship, and shamanism.…
Ridge and gully in afternoon light is a distorted and strangely set out view of the traditions of a ‘regular’ landscape. The viewing area we are given is dominated by blended sections of different viewing perspectives filled with strangely shaped trees of varying different shapes, colour’s and sizes. All objects in the painting,…
Mark Getlein book, Living with Art takes the reader through a journey into understanding the various styles of art throughout time. In chapter fourteen of the book Getlein explains the different time periods of art. The time periods include the Oldest art, Mesopotamia, and Egyptian. The oldest art focuses on art near and around the Mediterranean Sea before 3000 B.C. defined as the prehistoric and Neolithic. The prehistoric era was a period when there was a nomadic lifestyle largely dependent on hunting and gathering. The Neolithic era is also known as time when tools were being developed and there was a large shift towards farming. The oldest art focused heavily on stone figures and paintings of animals on caves. Getlein includes an image of…
In Chapter 5, the work of art that I found most compelling was the cave painting in Lascaux, Dordogne, France, called Hall of Bulls (Page 112). This cave painting was created somewhere between c. 15,000-10,000 BCE. and may have been part of an ancient ritual. I find the detail on this cave painting to be utterly astonishing. I can’t even draw a proper stick figure in Paint and yet these cavemen were painting detailed pictures of running animals. It is amazing to see such a historical piece of art still living to this day on the same wall that the people painted it on. I particularly like the way that the wall’s rough exterior gives life to animals, it is as if they are running in smoke or dust. This is truly an amazing piece of art and hopefully,…
The painting of the rhino, wounded man and disemboweled bison is found deep in the Lascaux cave in France. The entire cave dates back to the Paleolithic period in art. To be able to create this painting these early artists depended on light from make shift lamps or candles to see in these dark environments. In order to create this astonishing art work the need for art supplies that we easily find at a store today needed to be created from their natural resources.…
Throughout the history of humans, one thing has always stood out. As soon as man was created, art was created. Scientists have discovered cave paintings from cavemen more than ten thousand plus years ago. Ever since we figured we could create objects using mud, we have never stopped. Ten thousand years later and art is one of the most important things we have in the world today. Instead of using mud, we use paint, glass, markers and so on. Some artists work’s stand out more than others, but I will be talking about a few works of art from the local area. The idea of art started ten thousand years ago, and will most likely never end.…
Paleolithic Art is art that was produced about 32,000 to 11,000 years ago. The art of the Paleolithic period falls into two main categories: portable pieces, such as small figurines or decorated objects, and cave art. Paleolithic art usually depicting animals or humans, or nonfigurative, taking the form of signs and symbols. The art of the Paleolithic period was carved out of bone, antler, or stone, or modeled in clay. This art has been found in much of Europe, in Northern Africa, and in Siberia. Neolithic Art is the art and architecture of the prehistoric period stretching roughly from 7000 to 3000 BC. Neolithic art was primarily pottery and architecture. By the Neolithic age the advances in technology such as farming, weaving, the advent of pottery and the construction of structures such as Stonehenge, indicate that humankind begin to settle and develop their land.…
The Chauvet Cave revealed, among other things, that art may not have developed linearly as scholars previously assumed. The Chauvet Cave, though at least 10,000 years older than the other discoveries, contains surprisingly sophisticated art, by far the most realistic of all the other examples of cave art discovered so far. The use of modeling, or shading, to give the art the appearance of volume has yet to be found in any other caves. The fact that the art in the Chauvet Cave predates other, more simplistic discoveries seems to suggest that, rather than the level of sophistication paralleling the evolution of man, the use of naturalism, modeling, and illusionism was most likely determined by cultural factors or even varying amounts of skill…

Art is one of the oldest ways in which humans communicate. Art can be dated back to humanities’ first steps, used as a mean to record and worship, such as the examples found in cave paintings of the Lascaux cave in France or the Venus of Willendolf. (Source #1)…
Lascaux cave paintings were discovered in 1940 in Montignac, France. The cave paintings were 15,000 to 17,000 years old. The paintings were mostly paintings of animals, which are great examples of art during the Upper Paleolithic period. Some of the sections of the cave paintings have been identified as the Lateral Passage the Chamber of Felines, the Great Hall of the Bulls, the Shaft of the Dead Man, the Painted Gallery, and the Chamber of Engravings. The cave has about 2,000 images that can be separated into three groups which are animals, signs, and human figures. The animals are of a bird, cattle, horse, rhinoceros, bison, bear, and felines. The famous image that appears on the walls of the Lascaux cave is the black bull that is 17 feet…
This magnificent painting dates back to Lascaux, France 15,000-13,000 B.C.E. It was found on cave walls and it is said to represent one of the earliest examples of artistic expression. We can see that this piece was created during the Paleolithic period because; they are images walls using paint on limestone. We can see that the primitive people used natural rock contours, which suggested the animal’s volumes and portrayed real representations of a major role in their lives, which were the animals. We can see horses, bulls, deer, cows and more animals on the walls of these caves. Furthermore, the images of the animals are…
Layers of inscriptions, phallic symbols and graffiti drawings have been discovered from of one of the walk-in alleys and traces of red, black and green frescoes that have been obtained from recent restorations point out that the environment was far more colorful than what is perceived today. Prehistoric Art is a term used to describe the artistic depictions of a people who haven't yet implemented writing into their culture. The appearance of written word dates back to the Sumerians (3250 BC) and their use of pictographs, small pictures that tell their story, describe their lives, and record the data they needed to keep track of business details. All of these things allow us a glimpse into history and supply knowledge of times we'd know nothing about without the things they've left behind. paintings enable us to envision the past; they depict daily life, religion, superstition, and magic.…
