Cda Competency Goal 1
Competency Statement 1
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment.
Safety
Establishing and maintaining safety is extremely important. My goal is to prevent and reduce the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. Preschoolers are not usually aware of the dangers in the environment or of behaviors that can cause an injury to themselves or others. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times. Supervising them by sight and sound even during nap time. Another way I do this is by ensuring a safe environment inside and outside. Every day before the children arrive I make sure all the outlets not being used are covered, medication is out of children’s reach, furniture is bolted, all cords are tied up, that there are no broken toys and that all adults belongings are also out of their reach. Outside, I verify that the equipment in the playground is age appropriate, and there are no splinters, rusting equipment or sharp pieces. I complete safety checklist on a weekly basis and do mock fire drills, so that in case of an emergency the children know what steps to follow.
Health
What I do to establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children in my care, especially because they are in close contact with each other. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. On a daily basis I wash my hands before entering the classroom in the morning and ensure that all adults and children mother same. I always wash my hands before and after helping a child use the toilet, cleaning up bodily fluids, and handling food. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. I make sure they also wash their hands before and after playing at the water and sand table. Another way is to promote health is sanitizing all toys on a daily basis and

I do my part to maintain a well run purposeful program, responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make an effort to meet and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations or modifications to better service their children. I also ask the children which games they enjoy, and see if they have any questions for me about the program. This gives them an opportunity to know we have familiar activities that they are used to, gives them a chance to share their fears and worries about the program, and they also to get to know me a little better. With this information from the children, parents and our director, the counselors and I work together as planners, getting our weekly schedules for the children and taking turns delegating the activities. We come up with our own plans and put them together to form a enriched learning program.…

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. The teacher child ratio is maintained at all times.…

To maintain a commitment to professionalism in childcare you should set a goal for yourself. My goal in my classroom is to set a standard of excellence with in my facility and to commit myself to the growth and development of each child in offering a positive, kind, loving, and safe atmosphere. I have respect, not only for myself but, for my center, each child, and their families. I keep all parental information shared with me confidential. I feel it is important to always stay positive and keep a smile on your face. Stay on top of new regulations for your center as well as updated laws and other developments within early childhood education. Always make sure you have information to help parents that have children with additional needs your center cannot provide and have contact information readily available for the reporting of any sexual abuse, child abuse, or neglect. I feel I am a kind and loving person and am genuinely concerned about the growth and development of each child entering my center. I want to give them every opportunity to grow and learn in a safe environment. I love working and being around children not just in a group setting but also a one on one setting.…

Part of my role is helping the children see the potential hazard whilst in and out of the nursery setting for example on our excursions if we are by a busy road the children know to stay as far away from the road as possible (next to the wall). Competency Goal Four: To establish positive and productive relationships with families. As an early childhood educator, I have to maintain a positive and productive relationship with the families that come into my preschool. Parents entrust me with their children all day and, I make the parents and families feel as much a part of our classroom and a part of their child’s development. To create this relationship, I work to build an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each of the children’s family. I make sure to let my families know about my open door policy where they can come into the classroom and stay for a short period of time. A great way to get families involved is to have a volunteer sign up for each of our event at school. I find this is a great way to get my parents involved in the school to help out.…
