To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment.
Safety
Establishing and maintaining safety is extremely important. My goal is to prevent and reduce the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. Preschoolers are not usually aware of the dangers in the environment or of behaviors that can cause an injury to themselves or others. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times. Supervising them by sight and sound even during nap time. Another way I do this is by ensuring a safe environment inside and outside. Every day before the children arrive I make sure all the outlets not being used are covered, medication is out of children’s reach, furniture is bolted, all cords are tied up, that there are no broken toys and that all adults belongings are also out of their reach. Outside, I verify that the equipment in the playground is age appropriate, and there are no splinters, rusting equipment or sharp pieces. I complete safety checklist on a weekly basis and do mock fire drills, so that in case of an emergency the children know what steps to follow.
Health

Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children in my care, especially because they are in close contact with each other. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. On a daily basis I wash my hands before entering the classroom in the morning and ensure that all adults and children mother same. I always wash my hands before and after helping a child use the toilet, cleaning up bodily fluids, and handling food. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. I make sure they also wash their hands before and after playing at the water and sand table. Another way is to promote health is sanitizing all toys on a daily basis and
