Deep within the heart of New Jersey, the world-renowned Kingda Ka towers over the lofty peaks of Six Flags Great Adventure Amusement Park at a staggering height of 456 feet. The vehicle’s whimsical blue and green hues contradict its terrifying and thrilling nature. The incredible speeds of the roller coaster certainly provide enough of a thrill for the most daring adventure seekers. The winding path that the ride takes as the machine makes its way through the sky resembles the body of a snake as the animal slithers over the jungle floor. The turbulent trolley’s precipitous drop strikes fear into the hearts and minds of all riders that decide to meet the coaster’s challenge. Screams of terror and…

Everyone is aware of the name Wake Forest University carries. Obviously, I too want to be part of the Demon Decan Community. Wake Forest embodies the community spirit that encourages intellectualism and promotes civic engagement. The biggest reason for transferring to Wake Forest University is the philosophy of educating the whole person. As an Aga Khan Foundation Youth Ambassador, I was heavily involved with sustainable projects that had a purpose of solving challenges the ambassadors identified in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. Neither of our projects were one day projects, or charitable in any sense. Because the Aga Khan Foundation focuses on sustainable development, the ambassadors make sure to model the work and “Think globally, act locally.” Rooted deep into Wake Forest’s community is the…

There are 4 well known types of roller coasters. The first type is a wooden roller coaster. Wooden roller coasters are very sturdy. The tracks to this roller coaster resemble a train track because it has the rails and wooden beams. The wooden beams are placed in a criss cross pattern to hold up the track. Wooden coasters have a wheel design that also resembles a trains. They have an inner wheel with a lip to keep it from rolling off the sides. Wooden coasters can go upside down, but this is very rare. You start to question everything about roller coasters such as who started them? Why did they start, but most importantly, you question the engineering. To know the answers about the engineering though, we have to take a step back several years to when they first started, then to how they transformed and got to the way they are today. So, without any further to do lets get into the history of the engineering in roller coasters. Ozanu, R., in (2008) American Coaster Enthusiasts Inc., The name “roller coaster” comes from the term “Russian Mountains”. The inspiration for the modern roller coaster was a very simple ride that looked like a slide. According to Adam Sandy in Roller Coaster History How It Started (2006), during the 17th century, the Russian Mountains slides reached new heights across Russia in the form of ice slides. As the name suggests, these slides were frozen over with ice and riders were sent careening down the slippery slopes at tremendous speeds in sleds made from wood or just plain blocks of ice. The engineered design of the Russian ice slides were tall wooden structures with ice frozen over a long sloping ramp. These slides would often rise up seventy or eighty feet and the ramps stretched for hundreds more. The way the…

    Roller Coaster Ride

When I was younger, I used to love going to amusement parks because roller coasters fascinated me. These beastly machines are usually made of steel or wood, can go as fast as 120 miles per hour, and reach the height of 420 feet. It amazes me why average people like me would trade the tranquility of the ground to be high up in the air, being tossed around with such brutality and roughness, like vegetables in a food processor. Even still I enjoyed riding these fast amazing machines, sometimes so fast, that no matter how hard I tried to scream, my cry would not come out, as if it was trapped inside my body. I specifically liked the steel roller coasters with several loops, for they would give me the sensation of being spun around like rotating car wheels. The wooden roller coasters are also very fun because they sway much more than the steel ones, bringing back good childhood memories of when my dad would push me on the swings. What I enjoy the most about these captivating rides, and what makes me want to ride them again, is the thrill and excitement of having survived them. As I became older and gained more responsibilities and duties, going to theme parks became less frequent, but the excitement of riding roller coasters still intrigues and amuses me. Roller coaster rides are thrilling and exhilarating because of their speed, their hills, and their loops. Roller coaster rides are thrilling and exhilarating because of their speed. I used to think these scream rides went much faster than they actually do, but they simply pick up speed very fast, giving the feeling and impression of zooming through the wind. The air will gush at my face, making me believe I'm in the middle of a storm, or hurricane, which makes my hair go all over the place, as if I had recently received a really horrible haircut. The air flowing also gives me the chills, tensing me up inside and making me unable to move, just like the last time I had…
