For my essay I chose to describe the light and dark motifs in "Romeo and Juliet". A motif is a term used to describe a passage in literature that has more than one universal meaning. It is used when a character or narrator is comparing one thing to another. For example the light motifs represent light things such as goodness, while dark motifs represent dark things such as death.…
This foreshadows the death of tybalt which this is the main turning point in the play One of the ways Shakespeare presents conflict and violence in act 3:1 is dramatic irony to represent conflict and violence as we know Romeo is married to Juliet while no one else does. This would lead to violence if they found out. Tybalt knew Romeo like Juliet but didn’t know they were now family and starts a fight as usual. One of the lines that represents the dramatic irony is when Mercutio receives a wound which he calls a scratch, but he knows it is fatal. Up until then Mercutio was the life and soul of the party. He's a bit eccentric and enjoys having a good time. He is the joker of the group and gravity is alien to him, so there is irony in his words when he is dying. One of the ways Shakespeare presents conflict and violence in act 3:1 is dramatic irony to represent conflict and violence as we know Romeo is married to Juliet while no one else does. Light imagery is a very important aspect of Romeo and Juliet. There are many references to light and dark in the children's relationship. The light imagery is a recurring theme in the story. It is very important in setting the mood in their relationship. The depiction of light and dark is often jumbled in the story. Sometimes light is good and dark is bad, and more often it is the other way around.…
William Shakespeare utilizes the motif of “light” in order to highlight Romeo’s love for Juliet and to suggest that love can change people. When Romeo’s parents meet up with Benvolio, they use the motif of “light” to describe Romeo’s condition. His father describes how Romeo “Shut ups his Windows, locks fair daylight out” and how he “makes himself an artificial night.” (1.1.137) Romeo is depressed and prefers to stay out of light because he has fallen out of love with Rosaline so he locks himself in his bedroom, shuts his Windows and doesn’t want to be bothered by anyone to make himself feel like an “artificial night”. When someone is depressed or an bad incident has taken place dark/ night are usually associated with situations like this.…
(I i 6), nor it is about celestial symbolism hinting fate as the manipulator of “civil blood” (I I 4) “in fair Verona” (I i 2). Instead, Romeo and Juliet portrays a love not for another, but a love of unhealthy obsession, for the sins of the minds true desires. Desires disguised as love, unity, and wit, but when uncloaked the sins of lust, division, and malice begin to materialize.…
One of the primary impetuses in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is intense, wild feelings; love, hatred, anger, captivation, and shock are all obvious in the play and directly affect the terrible scenarios that develop. In (II.ii), the most acquainted feelings passed on are those of despondency, adoration and genuineness. Shakespeare utilizes symbolism, non-literal language and effective vocabulary to pass on these feelings to his audience.…
Juliet uses many metaphors and allusions to demonstrate or describe her thoughts and lust for Romeo. She begins her riddle of allusions by asking phaeton’ s carriage to bring in the dark of night for Romeo to arrive in this quote(3.2.2) “ Toward Phoebus lodging such a wagoner driver.” . She then thinks of how fast the night will come and how much she wants the night to come in this following saying of Juliet (3.2.4)“ bring in the cloudy night immediately.” . Romeo is supposed to come to Juliet at night, by climbing up the ladder. She hopes when he climbs up the ladder he will do what Juliet says in this following line (3.2.7) “ Leap to these arms untalked of and unseen.” She is anxiously dreaming and thinking of her husband arrival.…
In Shakespeare's acclaimed romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, the death of the two main characters can be attributed to two things. Their love for each other, and the social expectations of their time.…
Even through the darkest times in life, there is always light. Moreover, light brightens to overwhelm the darkness. In Night by Elie Wiesel and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, a major conflict exists to which people are killed from their violent and inhuman actions. These conflict last for so long, seeming as if there will never be a resolution. However, the motif of light is presented as the thought to never give up for Eliezer, Romeo, and Juliet, in order to reach their goal of freedom or unity.…
Revision Paper Allusions in literature can be the deep meanings behind plays. When a play is read, the allusions, if there are any, are often overlooked. William Shakespeare uses two allusions to support the theme that love is complicated. These two allusions are the reference to Cupid, the mythical god of love and affection, and the reference to Aurora’s bed, the Roman goddess of the dawn. Interestingly, both of these figures are referenced in Act One.…
Day 1 –Evaporation- My parents are dead. Actually they just disappeared. I heard them talking about getting warm and then they just disappeared. I heard some older water molecule calling it evaporation. I did not like the sound of it but I had to find my parents. My friend Zach agreed to help me. Today we were watching sharks attack a school of salmon when it happened, I felt weirdness. Everything started to warm up, like my parents had said. Zach felt it too. Looks like we were going to evaporate together. Other water molecule started to go up around us and then we were floating.…
The novel Romeo and Juliet comprises of two leading characters from two noble households whom hold a hatred to one another. These two leading characters Romeo and Juliet , whom are a pair of star cross’d lovers forced to conceal their eternal love from the feud and their families. These ‘star cross’d lovers’ experience love at first sight, marriage, banishment and death, all of which is completely unrealistic and artificial. But fate dictatorially decides the tragedy of events upon ending their life.…
“A pair of star crossed lovers take their life.” Everyone has heard this quote before, even if they have not even read or seen the play. Throughout history the play Romeo and Juliet is called the world's most beloved story ever. One of the reason they have this label is because people say it was fate and chance they met and fell in love. Another theory that contrasts the original one would be that their story was not caused by the stars, but rather each character and actions they choose adding on to the grief during the end of the story. Over a period of time by reading more of the play the context would just prove that theory. Then while watching both movies they just verified the theory thus making it legitimate. Most people…
Psychology is a subject with a lot of different views and theories. Every psychologist has his own theories about how a human develops mentally, physically and, emotionally from childhood to adulthood. I would like to discuss three psychologists Ivan Pavlov and his theory of classical conditioning, Jean Piaget’s cognitive theory and, Albert Bandura and his social cognitive theory. These developmental theories have similarities and differences which I will be discussing further in this paper.…
Parental involvement is a combination of commitment and active participation on the part of the parent to the school and to the student. There are many problems concerned with involvement. Many secondary schools simply do not know how to deal with the nontraditional family and the areas of concern that it represents. Parents feel unwelcomed at school, lack knowledge and education, and may not feel that education is important. The number of solutions that can be used to improve parental involvement are substantial. The most important of these, however, is for the principal of the school to be totally committed. When these solutions are implemented the effects are great, especially for the student. Improved student achievement is the key objective.…
