Are Cell Phones a Distraction? Cell phone distractions have been a major problem in society for many years. They are distractions in vehicles, and sometimes in classrooms, but cell phones are not always distractions and can help benefit the students in the classroom. Cell phone distraction has been a major issue for a long time, and some people see them as distractions while others see them as helpful tools. My perceptive show students, teachers and police officers on how cell phones benefit and show how they can be distractions in our daily lives.
Many parents do not see cell phones a distraction, but rather a way to be able to keep track of their child. One way they are able to keep track of their child is to have easier access to their teacher and can get updates of their child’s development without getting in the way of the teacher’s schedule. Also, being able to communicate with the teacher also allows the parents to keep up with the child’s grades and is easier for the teacher to set up a meeting with the parent about the child if necessary. Sixty-nine percent of American high schools now have bans on the use or possession of cell phones on school grounds (McGee and Thomas). The instructional features of cell phones prompted some teachers to re-evaluate the ban and consider the benefits of cell phones in the classroom. Teachers notice that students are more interested learning with their cell phone rather than learning by the teacher giving lectures. Cell phones allow students to research information, read a book, or play apps that are educational. Teachers have found much better ways by using the student’s cell phone and keeping their attention span longer and have them not keep getting distracted.     Cell phones have been a growing issue in the schools for some time now. Some schools have even banned them from being on the property others have set strict rules about the use of the device. However, the most interesting thing found by this author was a teacher by the name of Ariana Leonard. Ariana Leonard is a Spanish teacher at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel, about 30 miles north of Tampa, FL. There she teaches her students by using their cell phones to search for Spanish vocabulary words through a scavenger hunt. In Pulaski, Wis., about 130 miles north of Milwaukee, Spanish teacher Katie Titler has used cell phones for students to dial and record themselves speaking for tests (Armario, 2009).
