cell phone industry
The first mobile phones, referred to as Frist Generation or 1G, were introduced to the public in 1983 by Motorola. The technology used at that time was analog, which is much less reliable than the digital technology we use today. The first mobile phones were big, had a great deal of static and noise interference and very expensive, many of them costing hundreds of dollars. They were more of a status symbol during the decade rather than a means of convenience. During the 1990s, Second Generation or 2G digital technology emerged. The 2G phone technology was faster and much quieter than 1G analog technology. 2G also made smaller and more energy efficient, as a result, it became more popular than previous models. Besides, cell phone prices were became more affordable than the first generation. At that time, the cell phone industry was beginning to take off. The Third Generation or 3G, is what we currently use today. This technology is not only capable of transferring voice data (phone call), but also able to transfer other types of data, including instant messages, emails. These capabilities increased the popularity of these new smart phones.
There is no question that the mobile phone has had a tremendous and lasting impact on our lives. In many ways, more than any other form of telecommunications technology. Can you imagine life without your smart phone that allows you to browse the web, download apps, send text messages, check your email, take photographs, play music, find out where you are using the built-in GPS receiver and, by the way, also make telephone calls? There are two general benefits of this industry. First of all, the cell phone technology provided a network for communication. For example, residing in one part of the world, we can talk to our family members residing in another part of world. You can even chat and make video call. Only a phone call away, you can connect with the whole world by mobile. Second benefit is you can surf internet. According to Cell Phone Statistics in 2012, 71% of smartphone users that see TV, press or advertising that interests them will immediately do a mobile search. Surf internet anywhere and at any time is a great benefit as you can gain as much information and knowledge as you can. The main disadvantage is they can limit your face to face time with family and friends. Wherever you go, you will notice that everyone near you is looking at their cell phones, surfing internet, texting, talking or playing games. It limits the physical interaction between your classmate, co-workers, friends and family.
A new study shows the average smart phone users tends to spend two hours (119 minutes) a day using their gadget. And the average time we spend with our other halves is just 97 minutes per day. Spending “too much time” on cell phone from a student’s perspective is different than from a parent’s. Being a student myself, I have to admit the fact that we do spend too much time on our smart phones. We were born into this new generation, and quickly adapted to the changes. We have found a terrific method of socializing without having to waste much energy. It has become our world. For instance, texting with friends, chatting online, playing dozens of games. Smart phone became part of our life and plays vital role. However, our parents believe that we have become far too much intoxicated with the power technology has given us. Moreover, concerned parents believe their children may become side-tracked, because with the internet, it is so easy to make friends of the wrong kind and it is even easier to get involved in crime.
