For the past three years at my high school, cell phone usage was not only prohibited, but if a cell phone was out, any teacher or administrator could take your phone. Students would then get a written detention and if they had it taken away more than once, the student would get an in school suspension. For each of those three years, more and more students were getting suspended. Parents called in despair saying that their kids needed the cell phone for emergencies at home or at their workplaces.
This year our high school did a 360 degree turn around. Now it is up to the individual teacher as to whether cell phone usage is allowed or not allowed in the classroom. I allow cell phones and I think that they can be beneficial. This is why they should be used in the classroom:
1. Each of my students has a homework buddy. When a buddy is absent, the students sends a text message to the homebound student explaining what was missed during the period.
2. We do not have more than one computer in most classrooms. We like to get information from the internet and those students with smart phones can get online and find us the information that we need for discussions.
3. Many students have a planner on their phones. The planner is important for keeping test information or scheduling important meetings or work schedules. The students with ADHD or other learning disabilities appreciate the reminders that they would forget if it wasn't for their phones reminding them.
4. Most of my students work part or full times jobs. Their bosses can text them important messages about work schedules or changes in their schedules.
5. Parents can text important information about doctor appointments etc..
