Although there are plenty of new vocabulary items in the article, I think students would nothave any significant difficulties in grasping the overall meaning of the text. I agree withJeremy Harmer with reference to pre-teaching:
“by giving them some or all those words wedeny them (a chance to practice tackling authentic texts)” (Harmer

photo-journalist

decade

motivate

The restof the vocabulary issues (which does not impede the set tasks) can be dealt with matchingwords with meaning or synonyms at the pre-reading stage.I would use this article to practise skim reading. Though the article is lengthy, the first paragraph throws enough insight about the author. This enables a gist reading. The gist reading task –

Within the public services, people will skim a document to decide on its importance and prioritise their reading from this. You may have received a letter in the post and skimmed it to decide if it is important or not… if not you decided to throw it away.…

During my weekly readings I start by previewing and scanning information. I read titles and the beginning sentences to get a brief description of what it may be saying and realizing if I know the information or not. I take notes from each section and review the information throughout the week. I highlight information I believe to be important and useful towards discussion questions and assignments and or exams. Also I find a nice secluded area that way I can focus all of my attention towards my readings and fully understand what I am reading and apply it when needed.…

It is critical that students are provided interventions that will provide them the learning opportunities in content areas to ensure the students who are lacking prior knowledge and need additional instruction to build on their background knowledge. The article suggests that if the student doesn’t know the word in their primary language, it should be taught “directly in English.” By understanding this concept is why assessing the ELL before starting a lesson is…
