Athlete of the Year
Specific Purpose: To accept an award after being chosen for athlete of the year by ESPN.
I. Introduction/ Opening
A. Long nights, Early Mornings! Hard work is what it took.
1. Being an athlete might look easy, but it takes dedication.
2. There are many times I lost sleep because of being an athlete.
B. Anyone can be an athlete
1. When you set your mind to something it can be done, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
II. Main Body
A. The Early Years
1. I began my first sport at 8 years old (basketball).
a. Was very angry at my mother.
b. I wasn’t good at basketball, so I didn’t like it.
2. My mom got me a private coach and I began getting better.
a. When you’re
good at something you tend to begin to like it a bit more.
b. I began working harder because the payoff was so great.
B. High School/ College
1. Made the varsity team as a freshman in high school.
a. Made me want to work harder and be better.
b. Realized that I could really be something special.
2. Went to a community college to play basketball
a. Was a bit discouraged at first, but then I realized it was just a stepping stone.
b. Worked harder than I ever worked in order to get a scholarship to a university.
C. Being a professional
1. Getting drafted into the WNBA was the best day of my life.
a. My lifelong dream to play basketball for a living had come true.
2. I never have to work another day in my life because I’m doing something that I love.
III. Conclusion
A. With hard work and a positive attitude anything is possible.
B. I would like to thank ESPN and everyone who chose me for this award.
a. It is an honor and I will continue to work hard and make everyone proud.
