Century Canning Corp is the flagship company of the Century Pacific Group, a privately-owned conglomerate present in a number of food areas. Its sister companies includes The Pacific Meat Co Inc (canned/preserved meat), Snow Mountain Dairy Corp (milk products) and Yoshinoya-Century Pacific Inc (consumer foodservice) among others.
The company’s core business is in canning, marketing and distribution of canned tuna, pink salmon and bangus (milkfish). However, its parent company Century Pacific Group is involved in other food-related markets, including canned seafood, canned meat, milk products, and consumer foodservice. It utilises a strong national network of distributors to supply supermarkets, independent small grocers, convenience stores and sari-sari stores across the Philippines.
Century Canning Corp’s overall strategy is to promote healthy living among Filipinos. Known for heavily investing in mass media advertising, its advertisements focus on tuna as a good natural source of Omega-3 DHA, fatty acids linked to memory, brain performance and behavioural functions. The company’s Century Tuna uses the tagline “Think Healthy, Think Century Tuna” in order to associate the brand with healthy eating and lifestyles. In 2009, it employed Derek Ramsay, sports and fitness icon, as its celebrity advocate.
Century Canning Corp manufactures its products in a state-of-the art canning facility in General Santos City, the main source of live tuna in the Philippines. The plant is strategically located in order to guarantee freshness

May 2007 to April 2009 Update Over the past two years, AFC has faced more intense competition, particularly from aquaculturists in Chile. In addition, Chilean output has increased the supply of salmon and the Canadian dollar has strengthened in relation to the U.S. dollar. As a result, AFC has been unable to meet its budgeted revenue targets. Stocks of unsold harvestable fish have increased, as well as the corresponding cost of maintaining the fish, and the company barely made a profit in fiscal 2009. In January 2009, AFC lost one of its largest retail customers, S&F Seafood, to a new salmon aquaculture firm, Nu-Farm Inc. This new competitor uses a sophisticated, computerized system for supply chain and product distribution functions. The system allows Nu-Farm to establish web links with customers, such as S&F Seafood, and to manage orders and deliveries directly for each of the customer’s retail outlets. This has eliminated the need for customers to make separate arrangements to receive and warehouse fresh fish, and to ultimately distribute the fish to their retail locations. In February 2009, 2,000 kilograms of fish from Site 4 were rejected by three important customers, two of which are located in the United States. An internal investigation revealed that two employees at Site 4 had neglected to follow established procedures and failed to reject some fish that did not meet quality standards and were not certified by the staff veterinarian. In April 2009, employees neglected to secure some of the net-pens at Site 3. During a storm, more than 300,000 kilograms of young fish escaped from these net-pens and most were subsequently lost to predators. Although the company’s property and liability insurance covers criminal theft of fish, it does not cover the loss of fish from disease, parasites, escape, or predators. In addition, there is no liability coverage with…

Over the past two years, Jones Soda Company has successfully acquired strategic alliances with various companies in order to provide deeper and more diverse market exposure. Some of these companies include Barnes & Noble, Panera Bread, and Starbucks. Since Jones does not deal in multimillion dollar advertising campaigns, this is their best way to promote their brand. By offering their wide assortment of beverages in stores and restaurants, Jones has been able to sell more to the consumer than would be at all possible on their own. In order to best continue on this route to success, the current recommendation is to acquire a strategic alliance with Applebee’s.…

As a Buyer for the Bay, I would ensure that these new brands that I was bringing in to my department would be productive by researching every brand and making sure there on the same trend line that we are trying to follow. Knowing your target market is also a key element when introducing new brands. The selection factors that I would look at when choosing what brands to bring into my store would be dependent on the season, fit, colour or pattern, durability of garment or product, price, versatility/multi-use, designer label/prestige factor and quality of construction. When deciding what brands to get rid of and which ones to keep, this would be solved by knowing which products are successful and which ones are not. Also which brands are going to match the new reconstruction of our company the Bay and which brands fits in with the new theme and which ones are outdated.…

Abundant Harvest, located in Devil’s Valley, Wisconsin, is a long-time processor in the highly seasonal vegetable canning industry and is well known for the consistent quality of its product offerings. Chelsea Skye-Rice, previously the financial director, succeeded her father, Robert Skye, as the president of Abundant Harvest. Don Bartley, Robert Skye’s nephew, is the sole sales rep for the company. Abundant Harvest records more than $28 million in sales annually. Currently, sales are down and buyers for some supermarket chains that might be potential new customers have demanded quantity guarantees much larger than Abundant Harvest can supply, which is difficult to do in the short-run. Also, changes in minimum wage laws have increased costs. These and other rising costs have squeezed profit margins, leading to the recent closing of two plants. Chelsea has identified narrowing profit margins, debts contracted for new plants and equipment, and an increasingly competitive environment as concerns to address when formulating Abundant Harvest’s strategy.…

Raw materials (fruits) are purchased on terms calling for payment within 30 days of receipt of goods, but no…
