Certainty In The Giver

To follow blindly is to be ignorant in itself. Individuals must have doubt in everything they do. Being certain that everything is the way it is will lead to people becoming blind followers. Blind followers will only help assist in the crumbling of human civilizations. Individuals must doubt almost everything and learn to ask questions and learn why things are the way the are. Doubtfulness enables the person to think harder on their own and force them to think a valid thought on their own without others. Putting your trust in something completely is a risky action and individuals should be cautious when they believe in something with complete certainty. Individuals should always choose to have doubt in their life over certainty because it allows for people to think on their own and create their own thoughts without being influenced by external factors.
The civilians that are in the dystopias are certain about everything their government does and as a result, they are oblivious to what the reality is and how terrible they are living their lives. Individuals should learn to question everything and not accept the flow of why things are happening. In the novel, The Giver, Jonas and his friends and family live in a dystopia where so many things are taken away from them such as, the ability to see color and the ability to feel emotions. Later in the novel, Jonas doubts his government and runs away from the town, thus restoring the emotions and colors back into the citizens of the dystopia. If Jonas was not doubtful about the rules that he learned his whole life, he would not have helped all of the other people and everybody would have remained ignorant of the truth.
