Chain and Independent Restaurants
There are many advantages and disadvantages to chain restaurants and Independent restaurants, to begin I am going to speak on the advantages and disadvantages in regards to site selection. An advantage that a chain restaurant has over an independent restaurant when it comes to determine where your restaurant will be locates is, most chain restaurants have already had the research completed on where the restaurant should and will be at. This takes a lot of pressure of you; you want be responsible for completing research and determine the best location. On the other hand independent restaurants will have to complete all the leg work themselves, figure out the best location, and make sure the restaurant is being marketed correctly to bring in business. I am going to speak on the advantages and disadvantages for new product development. When it comes to new product development the independent restaurant has an advantage over the chain restaurant. This is true because as a chain you are required to stick with the guidelines and food options that the company has put in place. Where an independent restaurant can make decisions as to what food they would like to serve and what they don’t want to serve based on themselves. Lastly there are advantages and disadvantages for both when it comes to human resources, a chain has a guideline to follow when hiring employees, a independent can make this decision for themselves which can be a good or bad thing. Whatever standard the company has set as far as hair, nails, and appearance must be followed even if the chain owner doesn’t agree. The independent owner has to set these rules and guidelines from scratch, which can be a headache and time consuming.

    1. Franchisees gain numerous advantage when they purchase a franchise. First, while a franchisee may be opening a new store, it is part of an already established business and system. This means a franchisee has access to turnkey operations, allowing an increased speed to establishing and growing the business. Franchisees also get support for management and training activities, as well as financial assistance. Finally, site selection and territorial protection is offered for franchises. All of these advantages increase the chance for a new business in a franchise to be successful. While there are many advantages to a franchise, there are disadvantages as well. First and foremost, in order to own a franchise and take advantage of all the benefits of owning a franchise, there are fees and royalties which are ongoing for advertising, use of the franchise name, products and services, and for use of the business system. A franchisee must also adhere strictly to regulations and standards imposed by franchisors. Franchisors also require the purchase of supplies and equipment from approved suppliers. Franchisors can also restrict what products can be offered in a store, which limits the product line as a whole. This results in an overall limit of freedom which entrepreneurs who start their own business do not have to deal with. Finally, and possibly most relevant from a business standpoint is market saturation. Franchisees have grown tremendously fast in recent years, resulting in an overwhelming number of franchises in the market place.…
