The setting of the story takes place in Washington Square. The two characters meet in a busy walkway. The season is Autumn and the temperature is cold. The cold, dark setting shows that winter is near and more change is occurring. Bill and Mary stop and communicate, and during their conversation, they notice all the change that has occurred between them.
Years ago, Bill and Mary were in love, but in the story, it stated that “something not very
important had come in between them, and they didn't speak”. They let something small come between them and went their separate ways. Another way the story shows change is when Mary called Bill's name, “he stopped. At first, he didn't recognize her, to him she looked old.” the author is trying to show how the characters have changed that they barely recognized each other.
Throughout Langston Hughes' short story “Early Autumn” changes have occurred in many ways. He showed change through the character's appearance and their feelings. He also showed change by picking a setting and time that shows that the seasons are beginning to change.
