I turn out the light in my room and slip out into the hallway to listen” (Staples 241). After reading the book written by Michele that is talking about Karim and Maha’s grow-up experience during the age of war, I think everyone who has read the book has different feeling about it. It’s a special story telling us about human nature, death, maturity, dream, challenge and love that we have gone through in everyone’s life journey. As far as I’m concerned, though I haven’t experienced such a long travel like they do, I really enjoy their story and they tought me that accepting responsibility is our first but essential step to our maturity and our original dream. That’s life, right? Only by going through all kinds of hardships can we know the true meaning of how to grow up.…

Amir realizes that Rahim Khan knows of his betrayals to Hassan for he said, “Come. There is a way to be good again” (202). Even though it was twenty-six years later, Rahim Khan understands that Amir can atone for the past by helping Hassan now. Meeting Rahim Khan, Amir learns that the Taliban has killed Hassan and his wife yet Hassan’s son, Sohrab has survived. Amir further learns that he and Hassan share the same father making Sohrab his nephew. The way for Amir to make amends for his past actions is to go back to Kabul despite the danger and rescue Sohrab from an orphanage: “Hassan had loved me once, loved me in a way that no one ever had or ever would again. He was gone now, but a little part of him lived on. It was in Kabul. Waiting” (239). Amir knows that he will never have a friend as loyal and loving as Hassan again. The best way he can repay Hassan is by helping Sohrab. Amir must be selfless and possibly sacrifice his own family’s happiness and his life to find Sohrab: “I have a wife in America, a home, a career, and a family. But how could I pack up and go home when my actions may have cost Hassan a chance at those very same things?” (238). If Amir acted differently when he was younger, Hassan may still be alive today. Amir…

Imagine the experience of living under the rule of a violent group of terrorists, with no freedom whatsoever. This is what it is like to Najmah in the book Under the Persimmon Tree, by Suzanne Fisher Staples. In this realistic setting, Najmah, the main character, loses most of her family due to the brutality and imposition of the Taliban. The novel depicted the Taliban as dangerous and strict, which is interchangeable for what the Taliban is like in reality. Staples used the Taliban conflict to deepen the reader's understanding of the impact of conflict on people's lives.…

Following the loss of her mother and baby brother Najmah, traveling with Akhtar and Khalida, begins the trip to Peshawar, Pakistan. During the trip Najmah admits that she "[has] not once on [the] journey" (Staples 87-88). This silence that has developed from her disconnection from others causes Najmah to become silent, resulting in the man vs. self conflict of her inability to communicate. (SIP-B) Her inability to sympathize or experience emotions and her inability to communicate verbally drive the conflict of her inability to connect with others. (STEWE-1) Her inability to sympathize is directly connected to her inability to connect with others through her not being able to have feelings for others. This causes Najmah to become antisocial, as without feeling anything towards others she never gets to know them on a personal level. Infact, she resists this connection. When she finally reaches Torkhum, even with all that Akhtar and Khalida have given to her, "[she] feels [she] must keep [her] distance from Akhtar and Khalida" (Staples 151). This lack of feeling leads to the man vs. self conflict of her inability to connect, which can be traced to the source in PTSD. (STEWE-2) Likewise, her silence yields…

Hassan uses his letters to Amir, who is now in America, to tell him how Afghanistan has changed. The streets of Afghanistan are being terrorized, but he only thinks to worry about those around him. “The streets are full enough already of hungry orphans and every day I thank Allah that I am alive, not because I fear death, but because my wife has a husband and my son will not be an orphan.” He also dreams that Amir will come back to him, free of guilt. “ And I dream that someday you will return to Kabul to revisit the land of our childhood. If you do, you will find an old faithful friend waiting for you.” His journey just proves to us again and again how wonderful a person Hassan truly is and how possible, but rare, it is for true integrity to exist in those who have the patience and tolerance to let it be…
