In “A Rose for Emily,” William Faulkner skillfully depicts the changes of Emily, who becomes a victim of the transitional period from the old pre-war society to the new post-war society. The author depicts the process of how an aristocratic lady becomes a killer. The story revolves around the life of a troubled and stubborn woman named Emily. After the death of her father and the disappearance of her lover, Emily becomes increasingly isolated from the society. She persistently lives in her self-made shell so that she can preserve her past and protect herself from the changes of society. By using peculiar factors, overcast atmosphere, and the contrast of desolate and modern life, Faulkner exposes the isolation of a woman trapped in the past, her desire for a happy life, and the degradation of the South after the Civil War.…

“A Rose for Emily” is a mysterious and unusual short story. William Faulkner creates a character, Miss Emily Grierson, who is so significant to the town that she is referred to as a “fallen monument” after her death. Miss Emily is an eccentric character, and although she physically changes, her character nor her personality do. Miss Emily is a static character, with internal conflicts, and has odd relationships with her boyfriend and husband. For instance, Miss Emily kept her late father's body and refused to give him up, showing an inability to let go. She keeps his body because she also does not want to be isolated, even though she avoids interaction by staying in her home. Miss Emily's isolation is external with society and also resonates…

Emily does not like change and after her father died she told everyone in the town “her father was not dead” (Faulkner 33). Emily has a very hard time accepting this situation. She keeps the body in the house and for “three days… they tried to persuade her to let them dispose of the dead body” (Faulkner 33). They succeed after several attempts to remove him from the house and when they do, they quickly bury him. This is foreshadowing the fact that Emily has a hard time letting the people she loves go and offers a motivation for Homer’s body which is discovered in the upstairs…

William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is the life story of Miss Emily Grierson. A woman whose life is fraught with tragedy and grief. Strategically told out of order, Miss Emily’s life draws us in, beginning with the end of her life and the opening of her house to the curious townspeople. The “scrambled” telling of this story serves several purposes in enhancing the story’s interest and depth.…

When Emily's father died, she did not have to pay taxes. Emily was left alone with only a house but no money from her father. The town felt sorry for her, only for awhile. As years went by, the newer generation wanted Miss Emily to start paying for the taxes but she refused. Some would think that she isolated herself from the community so that she wouldn't have to pay taxes. Another example is with the postal delivery, "when the town got free postal delivery, Miss Emily alone refused" (Faulkner,38). Emily seems like she did not want anything to do with the community, "she is out of touch with the reality that constantly threatens to break through her" (SparkNotes…

William Faulkner was not only one of the greatest Southern writers of all time but one of the great American authors of all time. His works have long been criticized and analyzed for their deeper meanings and themes. One of his most analyzed works is his short story "A Rose for Emily". While Faulkner uses numerous techniques and strategies which include the chronology of the story, his strongest weapon is his usage of the narrator as an omniscient gossip. Thomas Dilworth says that "the narrator is as important to the plot as Emily Grierson.(Dilworth). Whether this is true or not, the narrator is an important part that helps makes the story what it is, a great Southern short story.…

At that time Emily is described like a dead body as "she looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water" (246). This description of hers portraits the decaying tradition, but her "invisible watch" suggests that she is unaware of the time, or the change, and still prefers to live in the past. When the town authorities visit her regarding the payment of her taxes, she tells them to see Colonel Sartoris who is already dead. As she doesn't accept the death of her father, she now refuses to accept the death of Colonel Sartoris. By denying that, she declines the present, and prefers to stay in the past. The past is the world of her father and Colonel, where no one would ask her to pay her…
