Change Wheel Reflection
March 27, 2014 Unit 1, Assignment 2 Change Wheel Reflection; Fri AM

After working for JPMorgan Chase for 7 years I was laid off April of 2013 and it’s a year that I have been without a job has made me realize that I had to change my life around, plan for a new career and going back to school really put a damper in my life. Change in a new career is very scary and thought of going back to school that I have not attended since my oldest daughter was born was even scarier. Not only those challenges occurred but during this time I was engaged and married a few weeks before I was laid off. Now I have brand new family to care for, my wife, her two kids and my high school daughter came to live with us. Moved in to a one bedroom apartment with 5 people, no job, receiving unemployment, my wife also had no job except for what she receives for her son’s SSI got really challenging. Yes, of course negative thoughts and negative attitude started settling in. Job application after job applications no calls and no interviews for 4-6 months. No one was hiring and especially I being over qualified for some jobs or no degree set me back even more. This was a huge life changing experienced in my life ever. Knowing that my sisters and mom had their own families to care for and my wife’s family going through the same similar situations got even harder. My unemployment was running out and knowing that there was no extension by the end of December was another negative outcome to the situation.
Well 2013 ended and New Year was lingering around the corner. What to do with my life and situation was the question for my new life. This New Year can’t repeat as the old year and past situations. My wife and I met up with our Pastor and other successful individuals in our life and carefully looked at our situations. After days of prayer and motivation talks with our Pastor, friends and family we started to change our life. We started taking baby steps, praying every day and night and taking one day at time to meet our goals and look at what we need to do with our life and careers started changing the outcome of our situation. Knowing that I have a wife that will be cheering for me and a life partner that will be by my side and doing it as a family fire me up. Yes, it was challenge and knowing that there will be other challenges ahead of use was more of the purpose to start a new life and career. With the help of our friends, family blessings and my wife love we moved forward with our first goal. Knowing that I was doing something wrong in my interviews and my resume needed some fixing I started to get more interviews and calls from jobs. At the same time my wife also started looking for a job, well my wife found a job and I still not being hired really open my eyes to take the challenge to go back to school. Like they say one door closes and ten more open. I know it wasn’t a job but other opportunities started opening up for me. I got odd jobs here and there and my church wanted to pay me for the work that I was doing for them. This really became a positive outcome for our life and for a brighter future. Now I’m in school for an education and a career. It’s funny that now that I think about it was right in front of me and I made the situation harder for myself. All I needed to do is give it all to God hands and Believe in him, Trust in him, Love him, and have Faith in him. Now I know that I have his approval, my wife’s approval and most of all my own approval to move forward with my new career and my new goals in life. A new door has opened for a new career path and a positive outcome in my new life that is set ahead for me.

I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 2012 and transitioning from the Military to the civilian life style with a pregnant wife was one of the most challenging periods of my life. Instead of taking a break from working and living at home with my mom and collecting unemployment benefits, I had personal responsibility to get up and find a job after getting out to do what it takes to take care of my family. After working full time for a year we were barely making it, living pay check to paycheck. During this time I was consistently looking for new job opportunities. I didn’t blame anyone for my poor situation but myself and realized if I didn’t do anything I would be stuck here for the rest of my life. I just recently moved to San Diego County, receiving better pay and benefits to support my family’s needs.…

I know I am not the only person that has had a hard time getting into school, or understanding how. Now that I’m in it, I feel lots better but of course it has been a very hard time coming from a 9-5 job and then straight to another job to pay the bills. First off, I learned that it is not free. No matter how many ads and people I had spoken to telling me “oh yeah, school is free”. It certainly has not been for me at least. I had a few small grants but nothing that was enough to help out with my living costs/ tuition/ books, thus leaving me to the device of taking out student loans. Since then I have been seeking scholarships but have not had the greatest luck. With this information that I have provided, I have now taken one loan out and this is my first loan. I still work two jobs picking up shifts at a bar on a weekend and receiving a student loan. I shouldn’t have to take a loan out that I am going to pay back years from now. I am having to work two jobs and do two classes a semester which to get to any or the degree that I want, will take years thus leaving me with a huge amount of debt I owe. Now, I am still lost just finding my own balance of work and…

The Recession of 2008 left multiple wounds in my family, especially after my father was fired from his job which he held for five years for being an immigrant. The “Great Recession” was not only a hideous word but a malicious truth in my household; it left us in a ditch hole. Getting deeper each day, the hole was in the way of my family’s future. There were nights when we were lucky to have enough beans and tortillas to fill our bellies; other nights, my stomach would gnaw with pain and hunger as I had given it to my younger siblings. My father was out on the streets, willing to take any work that was given to him, and my mother would pawn the values we held in much happier times. Its impact was that one of a tiny bullet skewering the heart…

I was scared to say the least, however during this time God played an active role by aligning my family with people, resources, and motivation to not close the door he had opened. Now, after almost 5 years since that time I am faced with another challenge… College. I have always set goals for myself and College is no exception. The big goal that many people overlook in college is to create connections and change people's lives through God and expose them to Christ when there are so many negative temptations. My “common” college goal is to obtain an engineering degree get my masters and then find a secure and satiating career. However another goal I have set for myself is to come out of College with the least amount of debt as possible.…
